Snarl: one tough Dinobot

Postby Sculpt-Bot » Wed Jan 03, 2007 9:54 am

Well after having my computer in for repair (again!), I am finally able to get pics up of some of my more recent work. I am working on updating all five Dinobots in Alternator scale, and Snarl is my first completed one. I have found that old Zoids kits have paid off huge in helping me accomplish this. They work great because of the large open areas that allow for easy access and mounting of limbs/hinges etc. , and the design matches with the TF robot style. Snarl is equpped with his huge cannon that is directly inspired from his G1 armament. Another thing I am doing is making more character appropriate melee weapons for the Dinobots. Snarl's is a mace that also becomes the Stegosaur's tail spikes in dino mode. On with the bot mode pics!

Dino mode: I am trying to stay as close to the G1 transformations as possible.

Dude I hate you now... just because this is what I have been wanting Takara/Tomy and Hasbro to do for decades. Doesn't Tomy own the Zoids too... They really need to do this!... And really great work. I can't wait to see the Grimlock now :D

Too beautiful, can't... look away...

Sculpty, you are so amazing, I'd consider having your children.

The only thing that kinda bothers me is that the hind legs are straight. I imagine he could be posed in a way that it wouldn't be an issue.

I feel the same way Devastator! (about the legs, not the children thing, need to run that one past my wife!) I am actually working on "feet" That will attach to the bottom of the back legs, to allow for bent knees (the articulation is there) and for the tail to come up off the ground in a more scientifically accurate pose. The main problem I am having is incorporating it into the transformation and not just having them be "attachments". Right now the back legs are just too short to have them bent. Thanks for all the great comments guys!

Dude that is just beautiful, I love the dinobots and you definitely gave them justice. I'm not too familiar with your other work though, you have links on your previous work, I would love to check em out.

Yowzer - that there is some tasty work. And inspired choice using Zoid bits to such an extent. I've got a box of my own that I've used for various projects (my in-progress Shockwave uses a Hellrunner torso as his cannon!), but it looks like you've pretty much made Snarl literally from the Zoid! Genius. Once you've got the legs sorted I think it'll be nigh on perfect.

Well hopefully you won't be dissappointed. Grimlock should stand about an inch taller than MP Prime (so he can stare down at him and poke him in the chest), and Sludge's head is being re-sculpted from a Supreme Starscream's, if that gives you an idea of his mass.
Slag or Swoop will probably be the next completed one however. As far along as Grimlock is, I am pretty much scratchbuilding his lower legs (thighs and waist are done.) I have all the pieces for the other 2, they just need to be assembled. Thanks for your interest all!

Your Grimlock is looking pretty good so far as well. The only thing I would change though, is the hind legs of his dino mode/robot mode arms. I would make them more like the Classics Grimlocks hind legs/robot arms. They would be more accurate to a T-rex. The dino from limbs appear a bit ;arge for a T-rex as well. Smaller ones might look better.

Damn U beat me to it!! :x Haha but I'm using my Gairyuki from Zoid for Grimlock... As for my GigaGojulas, I have other plans for it  Always like to merge Zoids into Transformers line...

Oh ya by the way, arent the spikes on his tail suppose to be pointing upwards? Or have I got the wrong picture of a stegosaurus??

No, The spikes on a stegasaurus are supposed to face upwards. However, my guess is that Sculpt-bot has them facing to the sides so it can function as a mace.

Actually the rugosities (rough spots) on the tail spikes and vertebrae of stegosaurus show that the spikes actually were attached by connective tissue to the sides of the tail. The common artistic interpretation is to have them pointing upwards rather than out. If you think about it from an evolutionary standpoint as a defensive weapon, it makes more sense to have the spikes sticking out to the sides. The tail would only need to be swung from side to side to inflict damage, rather than rotated toward the attacker and then swung.
Most museum displays show the spikes pointing upwards. This is because most museum displays are very old, and it costs a lot to reposition a dinosaur fossil. Sideways spikes are a relatively new idea in paleontology, but there are few in the field who dispute that it was the natural position for stego's spikes.
The plates on Snarl however are wrong from a paleontology standpoint. Studies of the fossils tend to bear out the idea that the plates ran in a single row, with each alternating plate leaning to a different side of the body. (just wanted to cover my ass with the paleo-crowd out there)
Thanks for all the nice comments everyone!

ya i know the spikes really do grew out from the sides.. but the spikes in the end grew pointing upwards... I guess the makers of JurassicPark and authors of those dinobooks are wrong then... tell me about it when the king of all dino the T-rex having tiny little arms with only 2 claws on each hands...
