Jurassic part had plenty of embelishments, so it's not a reliable source for historical information. Also, scientists only have a relative handful of material to study that's millions of years old, so yes, there have been mistakes that were commonly accepted as fact for decades.
Here's a note from wiki: "Discoveries of articulated stegosaur armour show that, at least in some species, these spikes protruded horizontally from the tail, not vertically as is often depicted."
I admit that I was a bit bothered by the "thagomizer" (thanks Mr. Larson!) on this Snarl, but now I've learned something from all the silly bickering here, and the tail is now super cool with me
