Ive been following the second movie lightly, as I did not like the first one too much. I admit, I am a G1er (fire suit: ON!), but I am open to change. I did not like the new designs, morphing transformations, lame humor, or hypocritical mass shifting of the Cube. I know the time for this is past, and I am notr trying to argue, just saying where I am coming from. I REALLY think they could have updated the design without making them looks so classless. Those designs will not look good in 10 years. OTOH, look at how Devils Due and IDW "updated" the look...) That being said, I know its for kids and its 2008 and kids loves that anime style. Just thought I'd get some ideas off my chest..
Devastator: I really hope they do him right. With the current design style, it'll be hard to make him look like a big robot made of smaller robots. But I am excited to see him. I hope he smashes the Golden Gate Bridge.
Megatron: I dont like the new mode, at all. Why still a cybertronian form? He should have an Earth mode like all other TFs. Use his design for The Fallen, make megatron into an earth artillery truck, or really cool earth tank, and give him his arm cannon back. Forget the clap gun.
Hot Rod: I hope he keeps the same attitude he had in G1 as a young gun, and is not made too irresponsible and kiddy, (like how Bumblebee went from dependable friend/sidekick to immature)
Soundwave: Please sweet baby J dont mess him up. He doesnt even have to be full size. He could be only 10ft tall for all I care, which would actually make for a cooler dynamic since he could be more agility based. Gotta have ejecting bots from chest. Alt form: Please be something a stealthy that can really blend into an environment. It'd be nice if one his minions became a tape deck as tribute.
What would be cool to see (and I believe this an example of how to keep the G1 feel while adding something new): Prime calling for backup during the movie, and being helped out by Ultra Magnus and his trailer armor, who also brings some trailer armor for Prime.
some random thoughts on the movie...

Well, firstly, I don't count the cube's size shifting as being hypocritical. They said Transformers wouldn't mass shift. It's not a transformer. Ergo, they did nothing hypocritical. But thats how I think of it.
Devastator: Yeah, with the design aethetic, it will be hard to identify his components. But I still they'll make some very obvious visual cues like the scoop/bucket/thing of one of them hanging off somewhere looking very conspicuous. But as I recall, they did say the Constructicons wouldn't all be the same colour.
Megatron: I'm gonna stick with my excuse for his jet mode. He's Megatron. He's too badass to have an Earth form. What's he got to hide from? Autobots? He could munch every single one of them and he knows it. If he gets a new form, it'll be mainly to outdo his previous form and to repair himself. And if he can have any form, it may as well be a Cybertronian piece of artillery. To be honest, I would've thought someone into the older stuff would be more comfortable with him turning into a more traditional Megatron alt. form.
Hot Rod: He HAS to be the novice. Or at least the so-skilled-soldier that he can knock Decepticons down while looking uber cool an stuff. Something tells me he isn't going to have the biggest role in the film. They don't want to run the ris kof him overshadowing Bumblebee as the cool guy.
Soundwave: Having him be agile? I never saw him as a bot who would engage in combat himself. I thought of him as a guy who'd stand back and let his minions do all the work while he focused on more cerebral activies.
Calling for backup. I was never comfortable with this in any show ever. When the good guys can simply call on friends back at base to bring the heavy artillery that they probably should've brought anyway, and then they just nail the bad guys with it. This trick is how they introduce new characters in shows all the time (especially ones designed to sell toys). The bad guys get the upper hand with either their own new guy or a new weapon, and just as the good guys are getting thrashed with it, the new guy shows up at the last minute and saves the day. Doesn't appeal to me, even if it is a suit of trailer armour (which I don't like the sound of anyway, it brings up the question 'why doesn't Prime wear the armour all the time?').
All I hope for is more mad action and some more brains and, yes, less of the silly sense of humour.
