Bigger question. Why is it that there's no damage to Devistator's face while on top of the pyramid when one of the twins just ripped a new mouth open moments before he started climbing said pyramid.
The reasoning behind attacking the Pyramid and not continueing to attack the twins is because Megatron ordered him to.

Also their combined form seems to be a similar size to the new forms that they take individually. The fact whether they could have died never crossed my mind, so I believe that they survived.

Except as you rightly pointed out, an ice-cream truck isn't really much use. So the real question is "Why have a combined form in the 1st place?" Hahaha.

Well I think to say "normally" is too strong a word.
The way I see it, the twins are like G1's "TRUE" first combiner.....Reflector.

I'm not sure Reflector really counts as a combiner. Maybe this is different in the comics sence he does have 3 different names on the toy and maybe 3 different personalitys.
In the cartoon however Reflector was never refered to by his individual names and the 3 clones that formed his camera mode seemed to opperate as one hive mind not as individuals. Allthough this would be the only other case of multiple robots combineing to form an alt mode. (unless you allso want to count Han Solo and Chewbacca from the Star Wars Transformers toy line combineing to form the Millinum Falcon.)

Star Saber, Requium Blaster, and Skyboom Shield are not thier main alt modes though. The twins didn't have invidual vehilce modes they could use if they were ever seperated. Basically another reason why a combined vehicle really sucks. They'd be stuck in robot mode without the other one around.
The weapons however are formed by Mini-cons that all have a vehicle to robot transformation. Their combined form isn't even a vehicle but more like a Targetmaster Combiner if thoughs actully exsisted.
