I like that he has what looks like a big belly. He should have a trucker belly. He acts like a cranky old trucker. (no offense Cranky Old Truck  )
I also like his tire buns. I think it's funny. He's gonna leave some serious skid marks on some poor Con's face. :P

Not sure if serious? :-?

The same "iconic licenced [sic] van."

The only things changed were a slight shortening of the pelvis and upper thighs. If you look at the second pic I posted under that one, I show how the midsection could have been designed to have the lights and bumper fold inwards with an alternate section molded onto to bottom of the piece that would swing into place to complete the lower part of that boxy chest look he had in most of the G1 toon and a legit ab section. The hip flaps, of course, would swing backward to cover his tire assets. To make up for the height needed to complete vehicle mode, the slightly collapsed thighs would extend from the lower leg section.

If I had to guess, I'd say the designer struggled to achieve the desired height based on the animation model sheet they are using for reference on all the post MP-10 figs. This led to some oddly stretched proportions. I have no idea why the face sculpt looks so terrible, though. That's just a poor design choice.

The real head scratcher is why TakTom pulled Shoji Kawamori from the MP design duties to work on other projects. Why pull the guy knocking them out of the park in the middle of the game?

So, where do the headlights go in that Photoshopped pipedream? Those are part of the animation model. Neglecting them is deprecating the screen accuracy of his look as well. Face it, the cartoon cheated. If you want a squared off chest with little vehicle kibble around his waistline, you're going to have to settle for a lot of ugly transformation lines and fragile, fiddly pieces, or cheatsy faux parts to get that look. So what if Ironhide is a little tubby when it comes to engineering a "Masterpiece" version of him with real-world limitations and physics? He's completely recognizable the same character he always was in G1, even if he looks a little "fat." Stop shaming the poor bot for his dadbod!

People are allowed to point out perceived flaws in the figure. We all know Ultra Magnus suffered from budgetary concerns. Like many problems in life, throwing more money at an under-engineered or poorly engineered figure can make it better... and I'm not saying that Ironhide is necessarily those things, but from where I stand, he could be better.

Umm... Are you guys even reading my posts or looking at the pictures? I describe the process in detail in my last post and show where the breaks and pivot would be in that second pic in my first post. :BANG_HEAD:

Sometimes he was drawn with the bumper and headlights, and sometimes he wasn't. Regardless, it would be simple to mold those into the piece that becomes his midsection in my example. This isn't rocket surgery. This is simple engineering. There were many ways that the fig could have been streamlined, but wasn't.

Hey. Enjoy your derp-faced mis-proportioned Ironhide with the useless rocket sled thingy bursting with accessories. I'll save a buck and continue to hope they don't screw up the next design.

Last time Kawamori was involved, it was on the MP Starscream mold. The latest MP-11s followed roughly the proto type designs sans the hip kibbles. Not sure if he was still involved.

Wonder why all the negativity when it still hasn't been released. I'd say wait til the release then hammer the fig.

Got the same vibe from all the critics of MP-21. In hand, BB was and still is awesome!

First, unless you have actually designed and built Transformers yourself, you're doing nothing more than "armchair" engineering. You don't know that your ideas are feasible, especially because no one really has a finished sample in hand right now. I trust that these Takara designers are doing things the way they are for good reason and not to deliberately upset fans. At least save the "shoulda/coulda/woulda" until this figure is released.

Second, every character has animation oopsies in the original cartoon, but the vast majority of the time, Ironhide's headlights are there on the bottom of his chest. Also, yes, you can mold them on to a faux piece, but Masterpieces are engineered to get away from "cheats" like that. If you want cheatsie parts, that's what less expensive mainline releases are for. Masterpieces are supposed to be masterpieces of engineering and G1 aesthetic, bringing each figure as close as possible to the real-life vehicle of their alt mode and the look of their robot modes in the cartoon while retaining a believable transformation that makes you believe a truck, car, airplane, or whatever can really transform into the iconic robot figure you know and love. You can't have it all, but these compromises make sense and generally work very well.

Finally, what derp face? Ironhide's face looks fine. Take a look at the in-hand pictures available, not the stock photographs. The face and proportions look fine in person. I wonder if people can have body dysmorphia for other persons or objects instead of just for themselves...

Optimus' grill abs and Magnus' chest windows are calling you out!

I'm not saying you're wrong from the perspective of a unifying or overal design philosophy, but in practice cheating does happen, and is often necessary. I wouldn't judge it too harshly.

I will say, though, that you would think it wouldn't be necessary with Ironhide - it feels like it should be simple. But as you note, we don't have that insight; we're not the designers.

I agree with they could have collapsed the front bumper, and how hard would it have been to put an extra swivel or hinge on the hip kibble to swing it away in another direction?

If they were able to pull off an all in one transformation anything is possible.

It seems he looks great on an angle, but straight on he will always have that tubiness.

The tubiness is a given. Correct. That front cab is sloping unlike the original Diaclone headless original. Given how almost 90% close to the original show the final product appears (emphasis on appears as we haven't gotten hold of him yet).

Btw, as megatronus also opined, some sacrifices had to be made some may like it, some may not. Could it have been accomplished pragmmatically without increasing the R & D cost? Who knows?

If TT went the SoC way, we might not be able to afford him and the end result would be no more new molds as it won't be financially feasible.

The words "derp" and "derpy" existed long before the pony was named as such.

"Derp" and "derpy" have many meanings, among which are "stupid", "dumb", "lousy", "lame", "lackluster", "subpar", "mediocre", "imperfect", "flawed", etc.

This place is a barrel of laughs. I'm pretty sure the title of the thread has the words "Ironhide Discussion" and not "Ironhide Admiration" in it.

I am of the opinion that this fig stinks, and I shared my thoughts on how it could have been made better. I feel the money spent on the sled and accessories should have instead been funneled back into tightening up the figure itself.

I can't tell if you were "welcoming" me or the other guy as you quoted both of us and we're both new. Judging by your condescending reply to my original post, I'm guessing it was the other guy.

I myself love the Bayformers designs (let's not discuss the quality of anything past the first film, though,) and Animated was the best Transformers series since G1. It didn't hurt that the toys looked like they stepped right out of the toon. Now THOSE were engineering marvels.

Despite what the OCD nitpickers say, this MP Ironhide is simply GENIUS! Having all these nods and easter eggs hommaging the original G1 toy is pure genius!

I wonder if MP Ironhide could transform into his G1 Derpbot mode? Officially or not. :-?
