I actually liked the idea of Blast-Off being a jet, but with QS's head? Come on. I'm still holding out hope that that was only for the sake of having a painted proto-type to show off. But I'll still buy it, and be pleasant as punch if a 3P makes a new head for him

Actually, space shuttles were built with some USAF money, and the cargo bay was designed to the specs of the bus-sized KH-11 spy satellite. In addition, the Air Force wanted a fleet of their own shuttles, launched from Vandenberg AFB in California.

As for what that above vehicle is, that's the USAF unmanned space shuttle: the X-37.

still my comment stands...A space shuttle with instantly recognisable military vehicles is a bit of a stretch...before we even get into the debate of size differences!

Now what I would love is a whole space themed combiner...

We've been wishful-thinking a new Blast-Off mold was going to happen since BotCon, but until we see an actual prototype/test-shot, this pic could just as easily imply that Takara's already blown their budget for new Unite Warriors sculpting and tooling as of the new Constructicon elbows, and need to get more mileage out of the deluxe Groove mold by having a repaint of him replace Blast-Off, possibly repainted into the RAM or Silver Mirage for a nice G.I.Joe homage.

A motorcycle would scale better than a space shuttle, after all.

Not that I want that. Just sayin'.

While I totally understand G1 purism, I wouldn't be at all sorry to not see Blast Off as a 'space shuttle' anymore. The space shuttles are indeed retired, and with good reason. They are, as described by Agent Mulder of the X-files, 'A dinosaur spacecraft made in the 70s by scientists setting their sights on space at an ever declining scale - a rusty old bucket that should be mothballed.'

That said, I don't think it would be a bad thing to turn Blast off into a more conventional spacecraft that at least resembles a space shuttle. But making just a repaint of an arialbot seems low-rent.

I don't mind the Aerialbot repaint, nor do I mind a full blow space shuttle.

What I prefer, though, is along the lines of what FP gave us - a drone. Similar shape, great compromise.

Yeah, one of those USAF low-orbit drone thingies would be a great mode for Blastoff. Looks like a space shuttle, an actual military vehicle (though not armed AFAIK- but then neither are semi-trucks!) and about the size of a small aircraft.

FP Blastoff was a great figure actually (floppy joints on mine aside). I wouldn't mind it if FP released an upsized Blastoff that was retooled with a CW joint (or a pair of weapons pods that formed the hand and combiner joint in combined mode and fitted onto his wings/shoulders in the individual form). It'd be cool if they made their own Vortex too, just for a little bit of variety on the team.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks that instead of just hanging off his back like the FP and Warbotron Blastoff figures did, that his nosecone should instead form a pair of shoulder pylons ala Gunbuster? For reference:

If Takara really is cooking up a new Blast-Off mold, I'll be even more psyched for Hasbro's "Brown Quickslinger" Blast-Off, especially if they have to compromise on his name. Why? Another NEW combiner member! And just like a previous Decepticon combiner stand in, a.k.a. Off-Road, we have a new guy taking on an old guy's colors, but not his alt-mode. There's a satisfactory symmetry to that. I'll order Unite Warriors Bruticus, but I'll at least buy Hasbro's "Blast-Off" repaint as well. Scramble City!

This is awesome news... Although not that surprising.
I am more than okay with Hasbro's version; as said before, a jet works well with the team.
However, a Blast Off based on the original, more accurate show paint apps, and a light gray Bruticus head has me all in on this set.

Not to mention, there's plenty of time to save for it!

Considering the closet thing I have to a Bruticus set is an Animated Swindle,
I'm freaking pumped about this!!

Plus, 2007 Movie Gunbarrel was a Redeco of Energon Blight/Kickback, whom Universe/ROTF Blast Off was also Redeco'd from.

If Takara does indeed make a shuttle Blast Off, that'd be a good case partner for a potential Groove release, a la Quickslinger and Brake-neck. But both of these guys are less likely than QS/BN because they technically already exist in the CW toyline, even if they're not 100% G1 accurate. Blast Off especially will have to wrestle with Hasbro's interest or non-interest in releasing two different deluxe Blast Off toys in brown for Bruticus.

We'll see where this goes.
