Star Trek Into Darkness helmer J.J. Abrams will direct Star Wars: Episode VII for Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm, reports TheWrap. The site says that Ben Affleck was also in contention.

Back in November, Abrams commented on the possibility of him directing and it sounded like it wasn't happening:

"Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more then anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!"

TheWrap adds that Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy has been courting Abrams for the director's chair for a while.

Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to hit theaters in 2015. Michael Arndt is writing the script. Disney and Lucasfilm are planning a new trilogy with a new movie coming every other year.

I hope they stay away from Tatooine. Twins suns combined with Abrams obsession with lens flare will blind everyone.

Seriously ... i'm all for Abrams taking charge, just don't obsess with the lens flares!

So Abrams is now directing the Star Trek films and the new Star Wars films?

...

Is that even legal!?

Agreed, but for a different reason. For a planet that is supposedly the farthest from a bright spot in the Universe, they visit it in five of six movies. Yeah it was downplayed in Episode III and Episode VI was filling in a gap from Episode IV, but still, it's a dustball.

I always had a theory that for all the complaints against Tatooine, that it was really sort of a nexus in the Force. A boring, remote little dirtball, and yet more important Jedi and Sith have walked on it than Coruscant, and it's far more important than anyone really knows.

A good director can only do so much with a story.

Whoever is writing needs to take a few cues from the current season of Clone Wars.

Mark Hamill's thoughts:

ComingSoon wrote:The rumor that Harrison Ford had signed on to return as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII started last week, but Mark Hamill now says that he and the other original stars have not officially signed on for the film. They are talking to Lucasfilm about it, however.

"They're talking to us," he said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "George [Lucas] wanted to know whether we'd be interested. He did say that if we didn't want to do it, they wouldn't cast another actor in our parts – they would write us out. … I can tell you right away that we haven't signed any contracts. We're in the stage where they want us to go in and meet with Michael Arndt, who is the writer, and Kathleen Kennedy, who is going to run Lucasfilm. Both have had meetings set that were postponed -- on their end, not mine. They're more busy than I am."

Hamill says in the interview that he doesn't know what he film will be about officially, but based on his tone, it would appear he knows more than he is letting on.

"I'm assuming, because I haven't talked to the writers, that these movies would be about our offspring -- like my character would be sort of in the Obi-Wan range [as] an influential character. … When I found out [while making the original trilogy] that ultimate good news/bad news joke – the good news is there's a real attractive, hot girl in the universe; the bad news is she's your sister – I thought, 'Well, I'm going to wind up like Sir Alec [Guinness]. I'm going to be a lonely old hermit living out in some kind of desert igloo with a couple of robots.'"

Also with the rumors of Ford returning in full swing, Hamill mentioned that he thinks everyone should come back for the film rather than just one actor, adding fuel to the fire that he knows more than he's saying.

"Another thing I'd want to make sure of is are we going to have the whole gang back? Is Carrie and Harrison and Billy Dee and Tony Daniels, everybody that's around from the original [returning]? I want to make sure that everybody's on board here, rather than just one."

Hamill also mentioned the direction he thought the film should go in terms of tone and its special effects use, and it makes sense to us.

"I said to George that I wanted to go back to the way it was, in the sense that ours was much more carefree and lighthearted and humorous – in my opinion, anyway....hope they find the right balance of CGI with practical effects. I love props, I love models, miniatures, matte paintings -- I'm sort of old school. I think if you go too far in the direction of CGI it winds up looking like just a giant a video game, and that's unfortunate. … If they listen to me at all, it'll be, 'Lighten up and go retro with the way it looks.'"

Star Wars: Episode VII is scheduled to hit theaters in 2015. J.J. Abrams will direct the film from a script by Michael Arndt. Disney and Lucasfilm are planning a new trilogy with a new movie coming every other year.

With the new movies on the way it was pretty much a no-brainer that we would see the end of the Clone Wars cartoon.

Shame really. The last season has been the best yet, and frankly the final story arc of the season was better than the three prequel movies combined.

I hope she isn't . They need to kill her off and make it 100% Anakin's fault, in a instance of selfishness on his part. Give him just that little bit more of a push to the dark side

Actually, the way it happened makes absolute perfect sense. One of the conditions of becoming a Jedi Master is that you need to train a Padawan until they attain the rank of Jedi Knight. Ahsoka was offered the title, but decided instead to leave the Order. When he's denied the rank of Master, it makes sense that Anakin would be mad since he technically did fulfill that condition, and in his eyes the Council is screwing him over on a technicality.

Killing Ahsoka out of selfishness, though, is very out of character for Anakin. At least, Anakin before his fall to the Dark Side; Vader would have cut her down no question, although he might have tried to talk her into becoming Sith first.

Wow I hate auto correct, I fixed some of that mess.

I guess my take on Anakin's character is different than your's, to me Anakin is all about himself. He is all about what he sees as his due.

Oh and I didn't mean Anakin kills her, just that he would be responsible. My fault for the bad grammar.

Look at what Anakin did through the final story arc; he's the only person to have full trust in Ahsoka, and went very far out of his way to make sure she was proven innocent. (Well, Barriss trusted her too, but not out of faith) And at the end, he's devastated because he's still losing her.

If Anakin's selfishness got Ahsoka killed, even accidentally, it would be a step away from the Dark Side, since it would pound the lesson into his head that "selfishness is bad."

I'm not sure he would feel that way. Anakin tends to rationalize his decisions, so I can see him telling himself that it wasnt his fault.

I don't recall any situation where he blamed someone else for something he did, but then maybe I'm not that well versed in the EU. I do know Vader has a serious case of self-hatred, and the first thing he said after Mace Windu died was "What have I done?"

Personally ... this last story arc highlighted just how bad the prequels were.

We saw much more emotion from Anakin and the loss of Ahsoka seemed to be more devastating to him than the loss of his own wife and unborn children.

Part of my was hoping Ahsoka would die just to give Anakin that harder push, but turning her back on the Order just gives reason for him to question it even more.

I know the new movies will most likely avoid all post-ROTJ EU, so I'm kinda hoping she appears to help guide Luke as he rebuilds the Jedi Order.

That's sort of a central theme in Clone Wars: Matt Lanter is infinitely better as Anakin than Hayden Christiansen.
