The Transformers Custom Idea/Inspiration Thread!

So this is a thread for anyone to talk about ideas for customs- be it sharing ideas they've had, asking for help on a good mold to make a particular character out of, or inquiring as to what to do with a particular figure they want to customize. Got an Energon Roadblock you don't know what to do with? Want to make a new version of Shockwave but don't know what mold to use? Have a great idea for a custom you'd love to share? Just finished a custom and want to know what to do next? This is the place for you!

I'm going to start the ball rolling with some custom ideas I've had, and a question.

In terms of customs already on the go I'm making a Universe Dropshot into Megatron, a CW Skydive into Starscream, a broken Skrapnel into an OC called Cherrybomb (basically a homage to the Beetras Beet-Papil figure that never got made), an also broken Animated Arcee into Minerva (gotta source some forearms first) and an Alpha Bravo into an OC female Autobot called Sonar (she'll turn into a deep-sea submersible with clamp arms).

And now for a question. So I have some CW figures that I don't know what to do with. As mentioned above, I'm making my Skydive into a Starscream and my Alpha Bravo into a semi-OC Technobot named Sonar but I still have a Dragstrip, a Firefly and a Silverbolt I don't really want to keep "as-is" (I have a Rook too but he's too cool to customize). So anyway, what should I do with them? I'm thinking of potentially putting Rook in with them and having them be an OC Autobot combiner team of some form, but I don't really have any ideas for identities, colour schemes or physical mods. Any advice/bursts of inspiration would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, let's get brainstorming!

You could maybe turn Silverbolt into Vector Prime?

I've had plenty of ideas, some of which I've made reality (albeit with less than ideal skill), some of which I'm working on implementing currently, and some of which I don't have what I'd need to implement.

Here's one in that last category: Legends-series Godbomber has a few issues. One that affects all modes is that the God Cannon is a dummy, it doesn't fire like the one from the original toy did. However, there is actually an existing piece that should lend itself to kitbashing in to change that: the missile launcher from a G1 Ratchet or Ironhide. It's small and short so it should be fittable without too much trouble.

An idea I'm currently working on is doing Minerva using TR Nightbeat for the face, but with some modifications. One was filling in the rageface mouth and cutting a neutral expression.. The other was getting rid of the faux-helmet detail since I'm going to build a real helmet.

An idea on the to-do list is bashing my TR PMOP's cab into a transforming one inspired by PC-16

Vector Prime? Hmmm, that could potentially work. It'd need a lot of modification/resculpting (Cyclonus would make a better base mold but I don't own him) but it might work. I'll see.

Another stupid idea I had: Remember that awful Bludgeon combiner FunPub gave us? Well I reckon there's a good concept in there somewhere. I'm thinking of taking a CW Onslaught as the base (as no way am I modifying an expensive Club figure) and doing the following:
>Replace the wheels with (static) tank treads, possibly from small model tanks.
>Modify the turret to look more like a tank and less like a folded up mush of combiner kibble
>Give him a proper cannon
>Give him a katana
>Give him a new head and combiner noggin (obviously)
>Give him a new chestplate, possibly based on a set of robotic ribs
>Make him look more samurai-y in general
Of course there's no point having a Bludgeon combiner torso without a team to go with him. I don't fancy the Mayhem Attack Squad route so I'm thinking of giving him some more thematic limbs, be they OCs or existing but fitting characters. Banzai-tron from the Brawl mold might work but beyond that I'm not sure. Any other thoughts on character concept ideas? I want to keep the Japanese theme, so keep that in mind.

Well, I thought of Vector Prime because he and Silverbolt have somewhat similar transformations.

Here's an idea I wonder if anyone's tried: Replacing Leobreaker's arm mode plug with a Combiner Wars one.

You could turn a plane figure into Deadlock, and have him adopt the samurai/sword theme before becoming an Autobot.

That's actually not a bad idea. As it happens I've already come up with 4 OCs but I might go with that if one of them doesn't work.

Anyway, those ideas (feel free to steal):

Limb 1: Immolator. A sadistic brute with an Engex addiction problem who believes only by purging the Autobots completely and razing everything they hold dear to the ground can the war be ended. Themed after an Oni, and transforms into a flamethrower tank. Uses the Brawl mold.
Limb 2: Night Dragon. A master of stealth and evading detection, Night Dragon is an expert at targeting Autobot commanders and leaving the enemy leaderless. Themed after a Ninja (and named after a cyberattack ala Nitro Zeus) and transforms into a car. Uses the Dead End mold.
Limb 3: Agent Orange. Highly knowledgable on chemical warfare in all its forms, be it poisoning a single individual, tainting the water supply of a human city or carpet-bombing a bastion with acid. She appears a sultry, charming individual, but this is a facade for the vindictive, vicious and utterly evil 'con she really is. Themed after an Oiran (a Japanese ultra-high-class courtesan, think a Geisha but with even crazier hair) and transforms into a jet. Uses the Air Raid mold.
Limb 4: Bodyslam. A slow and generally calm robot, Bodyslam is normally very relaxed and chilled out guy, but if you make him angry he will crush you. Nearly indestructible and immune to pain, he is a force of nature on the battlefield. Themed after a Sumo wrestler and transforms into an armoured...thing (I still need to decide on that). Uses the UW Nosecone mold (heavily modified as I have a spare one, but the drill mount and one of the hands is broken).

After acquiring Krok, I realized that he or Skullsmasher would be a good starting point for a custom Horri-bull/Bullhorn. The transformation scheme is largely the same, and the reptilian detailing works nicely too.

I'm currently finishing two CW firetrucks. One is an evil Decepticon that love to add gazoline to the fire instead of extinguishing it. The other will be Hotspot, but white.

The real project will be the next one, converting four CW deluxes. One "Lamborghini" will simply be repainted red and have it's head preplaced. However, the other 3 will become "Mad Max" vehicles. They will still be able to combine and becoming either arms or legs, but the wheels, arms, and most panels of the bots will be replaced to become post-apocalyptic vehicles made out of junk. Really "heavy metal" style. All characters will be OCs, of course.

And now that I finally have the Thunderwing Titan Master, I can convert my TLK Nitro into Thunderwing. The basic gray of Nitro will remain because the color is close enough and I don't want him to be a goopy mess. All black parts will be painted carefully. I only have water based Tamiya so I hope I will not mess up. The black parts of the arms will be deep purple, the weapon parts will be lavender, and the chest parts will be forest green. That's the only parts I will paint. Finally, I have some spare Reprolabels for G1 Thunderwing that I will use on him. The final results will be a modern take on Thunderwing, kinda like RTS Lugnut. And the fact that he's a Titan Master is perfect as it represent the inner bot.

Oh, definitely. The head should be swapped for something appropriate though.
Oh, and be very careful with the painting. Not making a goopy mess is very hard and bright orange will be hard to cover up. Better ask some tips on how to properly paint because it will be the main and hardest part of your custom.

Yeah, I’ve been doing a lot of research while I build up funds, supplies, ideas, and time. Some primer should do the trick. Probably won’t be my first one, either.

Oh boy, it's me again.

So as we all know, CW Motormaster is a bit of a pile of junk. A decent truck mode, an OK-ish robot mode and an appalling torso mode. And alas, that one 3P figure ain't much better. So, time to do something about that.

I'm thinking of sourcing a CW Hot Spot and turning him into a much better Motormaster, as CW Hot Spot has a similar transformation to G1 Motormaster (truck cab becomes feet, rear mass becomes torso etc) and is also a much better toy than CW MM. My issue, however, is that at the moment I don't know exactly how to do that. The feet/cab would be replaced with a "regular" truck cab front end, either from a junker figure or a cheap truck toy/model. However I don't know what I'm going to do to replace the ladder assembly. I want to minimize partsforming where possible, and I obviously need something to form the combiner chestplate and head which won't look like a random block of parts in vehicle and robot mode. Shapewaysing the whole assembly would be hugely expensive and possibly fragile. I have a junker RID Ultra Magnus who might come in handy so there's that, but that aside I don't know. I don't care if he's not exactly GEEWUN (a tanker truck or "rocket truck" Motormaster would be fine by me) but he needs to look like a vehicle, and not a block of combiner parts on wheels (looking at you PE upgrade kit).

The alternative is to find a similarly sized truck Transformer that can assume a decent enough "torso mode" and use some (fortunately existing) Shapeways addon parts to give it CW-compatible ports. This would be tricky but not impossible.

Any thoughts?

You just have to ask a MAD SCIENTIST for that! :KREMZEEK:

You can do like I did for ALBATRON . Instead of using Hotspot, use CW Onslaught instead. The hands part would be the front. I used Universe Octane to do that. You just have to leave the wheels.

The head part of the combiner hidden in vehicle mode could be a "machine gun tower" of some sort. Your custom would be much simpler than Albatron because you will not have to mod the legs at all and no helicopter bits to deal with. Have a look at Albatron , especially the parts that show the unpainted built. This may give you a clue or two. ;)^

At the risk of thread necromancy (hope its okay): I'm tempted to make use of the fact my local stores have a crapload of TLK figures and Nitro Zeus' Titanmaster port to give him a new noggin and a new identity....as The Fallen. No, really. Not any specific incarnation of The Fallen/Megatronus but more of a hodge-podge of various ideas: the blackened and burnt body of his old Dreamwave self, the flying alt mode of Movie!Fallen (albeit as an earth mode) and its more 'inner glow' heat than full on flames and a Tarn 3d Printed TR face as a nod to Aligned Fallen, who is generally depicted with some kind of helmet which served as the basis for the Decepticon insignia.

Thoughts?

You can never "necro" this thread enough.

First, what would be the head/Titan Master?

Before painting, make sure to disassemble everything that can be popped off. Be careful for the lower legs because they are lightly GLUED together. Also, protect any sockets or hinges from the paint.

The colors would be:
Beige body ---> Not black. Some kind of very dark metallic bronze. That Krylon color is wonderful, but be sure to prime everything with gray primer first:
Image

For a grittier look, use the same color, but "hammered finish":
Image

The hard colors to do would be the black "innards". All black parts should be primed white and then, painted in a variety of oranges, reds, and yellows, as if his insides were on fire. Becareful because those hot colors are VERY transparents. No matter what kind of paint you use.

The final touch would be to add some FLAMING Reprolabels. Here's a few sets you could adapt:

https://toyhax.com/upgrade-sets/1144-up ... results=13

https://toyhax.com/for-comb-wars/2214-l ... results=13

https://toyhax.com/for-comb-wars/2257-l ... yjack.html

The labels are still 50% off. So hurry!

I have some spare Titan Masters to serve as the base for his head. I've still not started my customs yet, partially out of cowardice and partially because I don't have have the space right now so I do have to ask: how do I protect joints from the paint?

Edit: what if I added some sculpted flames to the barrel of one of his gun, the one which become the exhaust or whatever that jet part is called.

Good ol' paint tape is the key to protect parts you don't want to paint. As what color to change the joints, sharpies is usually how I proceed. Even then, it don't really work because paint tend to or WILL come off when the joint rub.

As for the exhaust flames, you better buy a flame accessory and perce a small hole in the center of the exhaust/canon to peg it in. This will give you options.

You never disassemble a figure before? Because it's always the same thing. Leave the pins alone, unscrew things, untab things.

For Nitro, here's what I did for my Thunderwing custom:

Pop off the knee guars and the shoulder pads. Pop off the cockpit windshield and the back flap. Pop off the tail wings. The main wings are attached via a black things on the shoulders. tose can easely pop off as well. Pop off the engines.
Now, unscrew the back. Make sure to note where things go. Remove everything. The arms and legs are attached via mushroom pegs. With a bit of force, you can slide all the mushroom pegs out.

Unscrew the lower legs. Be careful when forcing the halves appart because they are glues by the pegs. Now, slide off the feet and the thigh.

And that's all I did. Ope it help.

Re: The Transformers Custom Idea/Inspiration Thread!

Postby Skritz » Fri Dec 08, 2017 11:57 pm

I've had some custom projects on the backburner. Sadly, haven't had the guts to start them, so my only experience is in painting static miniatures.

Also, a random custom idea I'm throwing around: what would a 'G2 Abominus' looked like? With Abominus coming out in PotP it make me wonder what an hypothetical garish G2 one would have been like to go with G2 Menasor, Bruticus and Devastator. The latter which does not exist in a CW form, but still.

I have an idea for a custom that is well beyond my skill set, but if any of my fellow Seibertronians want to run with it, feel free to do so. Without further ado... Based on the Metroplex/Fort Max mold, how about a Broadside custom? The mold would work well, I think, to sidestep the whole scale issue with his alt-modes. Have one alt-mode be an aircraft carrier (or Battleship), and his other alt-mode as a Cybertronian fighter craft with a cockpit scaled for use with voyager-sized figures (Maybe a headmaster partner for Broadside?). If it could be made to work, this custom would also have an added bonus- a quick repaint (and new Headmaster) would yield an awesome, large-scale Tidal Wave. Thanks for your time! ;)^
...back in my day, you had one alt-mode. ONE! Articulation? why, if you had enough articulation to transform, you had plenty. And if you wanted more articulation, you know what you did about it? NOTHING. You transformed, stood there with your faceplate closed, and your optics sharp, just like everybody else who didn't have ball-jointed this, and swivel-jointed that. And when your were told to, you transformed and rolled out! ...And another thing...

So, anyone have RID Warrior Windblade? If so, two questions.
1: How are the wings attached?
2: Is the nosecone a separate piece?

I ask because one of my many, many stupid ideas is to make one into Animated Lyzack, and I'm planning on modding her jet mode to look a bit like a MiG-15.
Image
Specifically, I want her to have the swept wings and nose intake of the MiG. The wings should be easy to remove, but if she hasn't got a separate rubber nosecone that can be removed then making the intake might be more difficult. Not much more (I'm a seasoned modeller) but considering that otherwise it'd be a case of "Remove nosecone, job done" it will be slightly more involved.
Ha ha Transformers go brrrrr

So, random thought brought about by the possibility of a shelf-warming Power of the Primes Starscream. Turning this...

Into this: Nominus Prime!
Image

I mean if you think about it, there are a lot of elements to PotP Starscream which seem like they would fit right in as the earth mode of Nominus Prime, what with bulky forearms and legs and huge feet. Not to mention that I'm pretty sure there's room to modify his shoulders and chest to match Nominus better. Beside, it's not like such a custom would be used for a combined mode anyway.

I think a better idea for Nominus Prime would be Studio Series Thundercracker. I mean he is just blue Nitro with a new head right? And speeking of Thundercracker i still need to post my latest custom; Combiner wars (deluxe class) Thundercracker. I have an idea to do a maching (deluxe) Skywarp, but to make him i would need a CW Airraid, a CW Skydive, a CW (G2)Airraid, a PotP Dreadwind and a 2014 Armada Starscream.
Click link to view my new customs; Combiner Wars (deluxe class) Thundercracker,Combiner Wars Braver(nonbrainmaster), Titans Return Cliffjumper(comming soon) + more!
