The United States of North America?
Just stumbled across this site: http://www.unitednorthamerica.org/index.htm
So what do people think of the idea?
With things like the "Nafta Superhighway" being recently presented, a unity of the nations of the North American Continent, especially Canada and the United States, is coming closer and closer to reality.

Funny how it seems to concern only th USA and Canada.
Then again, we share the greatest similarity to the Canadians than we do to the Central American Countries

I think that was basically what the site said-- like the UN not accepting most of the the former Yugoslavian nations, Mexico just has too much stuff to work out at the moment. And the fact that Canada's and the US's cultural differences are really superficial today.

While I have no issue with the eventual merging of Canada, the US, and Mexico, I find it to be very ethnocentric to think that America should be the dominant system, completely wiping out Canada's. If there's a merging of the countries, there had better be compromises made on all sides.

Never, ever, EEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVVVER going to happen.
Figure on this:
It's 100% in the US's best interest to keep two giant (and friendly to neutral) countries on it's largest borders.

Canada and US can't merge. Where will all us lilly livered liberals run away to?
Well, New Zealand and Australia would be nice, but it's too far away. Hey, we're also lazy. Must be all the grass.

You could come to Germany, that's not as far away, just like 10cm on the map.

You see-- I don't get that. I constantly here people saying that the US is a restrictive, hypocritical nation overflowing with neo-conservatives and evangelicals, with Canada being the only safe haven. But really, I haven't seen that.
There's a fringe group that just happened to win in the past election, and frankly one that many people are getting severely tired of, and that's going to get ousted in the next election. It's not some homogenous nation of hicks that watch the 700 Club. Just looking around shows that. A person'd have to totally ignore all major cities in the US.
I personally like the webowner's concept though-- just have a generally US framework that allows general workings up to the 'provinces.' That way, more northern states can keep strong SS and higher rates of gun control and hands-on government, while not forcing it on the more southern states. Though this may be coming from a non-nationalistic perspective; I don't see it as Canada being part of the US-- I see it as 30 million people getting equal representation among 330 million. Oddly enough though, Canadian provinces would actually enjoy more power under the US system than straight democracy-- 26/126 senators vs. 10/110 means about 20% representation vs. less than 10%. The results of tag-teaming with California and the Lake States would be a scream.
EDIT: What surprised me is that the guy's Canadian as as well. It would suck to lose the ability to sell these, though:

And people oft forget we border Russia.

Nearly every science fiction show shows the future as a united Earth. This could be the first step. Or this could lead to a standoff between continent-sized countries.
"Today in the news, relations between the United Americas and the European Union grew cold today as a dispute over the status of the proposed Siberian nation came to a standstill when New AntarAustralionesialand claimed sovereignty over the recently collapsed South Asian nation of KEERIPES!"

Too young to have heard the phrase "Draft Dodging," huh?
I'm a bit divided on this subject. On the one hand, someone's going to have their form of government either changed significantly, or squashed entirely.
On the other, I could get into Canada, and not need a passport.

Yes, but Canada wasn't a haven because it was a different culture back then, but because it simply was a different country, and not embroiled in war with a former ally for the 50,000th time.

Even if America does go to hell in a handbasket. Whats going to happen next? Canada is gonna go, then Europe etc, etc, etc.
So Canada won't be much of a safe-spot. However, the mass amounts of Canadian Wilderness would be a nice refuge to disappear into. And it would stay that way even if Canada became apart of the US, so if it all went down the crapper. Best bet is to just disappear into the wilderness in Canada, or anywhere else for that matter.
Honestly, I like the idea of a United North America, like what Locust said. This could be the first step to a United Earth, and then, after we unite the Earth. We get to go start wars on other planets. And wear velour uniforms.
Plus, think of it this way. Had Canada been apart of the US back in 2000, for the elections, they could have helped Bush not win as well.

No, we need Canada to stay in the Commonwealth, it gets boring only beating the Pommies and Kiwis!
That and you guys are only just starting to get good at Rugby and Cricket, and the USA would make you guys crap at them again.
I think it's just a USA ploy to take advantage of the Canadian Health Care System.

From a military standpoint we've got 2 big 'buffers', one below us and one above us. The US will probably keep to the middle and use Canada and South America as shields, if need be.
However I'm not opposed to the idea, Canada's got their heads screwed on right when it comes to a lot of issues that the American Gvt just passes a blind eye over.
But lets send another 10 Billion to Israel.

Well, of course you know that political correctness is pure evil, and even the slightest bit (Such as avoiding overly racial jokes/comments) can send entire civilizations to their demise.
