Neo is The One. Interesting, Neo is an anagram of one; it's a mildly subtle hint.

In contrast, Smith is The Many, replicating himself over and over and over again just like a virus, which he at first claims to detest but later embraces, believing himself to be the savior of the Matrix.

You could say that Smith was definitely a catalyst for Neo to actually fulfill his destiny; for without a virus, there's not much need for an antivirus, is there?

See, where some would say that Smith was walking around undetected by a large portion of the resident programs in The Matrix, I believe that The Architect knew about him the whole time, and that Neo is not as much of an anomaly as The Architect allowed Neo to believe. Rather, Neo was designed by The Architect.

It's all part of the "Perfect World" the machines were trying to create for the humans: let them believe that Neo destroyed Smith as part of a deal to let the humans go free, when in actuality the whole plot of the movies was just an elaborate "simulation" set up by The Architect.

So then does that mean that Neo was never a real person? Or at least not one with real thoughts and free will? That even when he was outside the Matrix he was still a program controlled by the machines?

My theory would mean that the "Real World" was just another part of the matrix. However, that would not negate free will.

Think of any open world/sandbox game. You, the player, can do anything you want...as long as it's within the parameters of the world created by the developers. Now, there may be an end goal; saving the world from ancient demonic dragons, for instance. Luckily, you just happen to be the first person in 100 years who can actually speak their language and absorb their souls. But will you do it alone, or bring along a companion? Will you side with the rebels, the national army, or will you try to be a lone figurehead of neutrality? You're free to choose - it's just that, no matter what you do, nothing has any bearing on real life, and the people who created the game have already planned for you to make those choices regardless.

Now apply this kind of thinking to The Matrix. The only difference here is that Neo and the other humans are not aware that they are only playing a video game the way you and I are aware that once we shut down our PS3, it's over for now.

I thought that as well, but I didn't want to speculate that the entire conflict was just a program simulation.

It's even more interesting when you consider the conversation between the Oracle and the Architect. Judging by that, you'd have to think "well, maybe Nemesis Maximo's just off his rocker," maybe I'm looking too deeply into it.

Maybe I am.

But that's one of the things that makes The Matrix such a great series IMO: even a decade after it came out, we're still contemplating it's meaning. The only other movie I can think of with that kind of power is Inception.

My theory is that it's all a sequel to Shadowrun, magic and metahumans have faded away, and the One is actually just a Technomancer. (Explaining why Neo can use his abilities in the real world as well) Hell, Shadowrun even features crazy AI and a big virtual interface called the Matrix!

In my admittedly limited experience, Vegas has the best buffets to die at.
