Tomy struggling with Japanese Market, possible Adult-focused ideas brewing!

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

TF other direction.

Postby noctorro » Thu Sep 06, 2007 7:41 am

Well here's my 22 year old from The Netherlands contribution to this thread:

I like the idea, not the kiss player direction. But more Gundam, so more serious and cool fighting scenes and though looking bots with a bit more then 1 lame projectile launcher but with more auto-morph like guns. Lets say the style of the Cybertron Defense Team. And the series should definetly be made by Sunrise, no more 3d transformers and no more 1 small action scene per 22 minutes. More dark stories, deep characters and old favorites back on the tv.

I also like the whole victory idea, g1 Star Saber, Energon Wing Saber etc.

If Transformers Animated fails (I just can't seem to like the toys from what I've seen, I like the Unicron Trilogy and The Movie toys. And am practically the only over 20 years dude that doesn't like alternators and masterpiece) I hope they open their eyes and see that a different more adult targetgroup is the only way to make more cash.

+ If transformers were more darker/cooler/adult-targeted kids/boys would like 'm waaaay more, that's a fact.

End of spam...

Fender Bender wrote:The entire toy market in Japan is on the decline for two reasons. The first of which, is the Lead Paint scandal at Mattel. This has caused Japanese Toy Companies stock prices to fall dramatically.

The other reason is that the youth population of Japan is severely shrinking. So with fewer children for these companies to market their products to, they are looking at targeting new markets--Adults.

This could very well be the reason that the Encore series has been released from Tomy. It could also explain why Tomy is looking to reissue several rare and obscure characters like Skylynx.

So it looks like this could be good news for collectors, but it could possibly spell the doom for the next generation as what makes a collector is having the toys when we are children to begin with.

This is awesome news. I am really looking forward to seeing what else Tak/Tomy decides to release. It can hopefully only get better for G1 collectors.

Longs for the days of G1 where we only had to worry about Megatron, Soundwave and Laserbeak wanting to be Autobots, Swoop calling himself Tracks and Slingshot calling himself Slingslot!

Wow... Yeah my head totally went in the gutter when I read this head line.

People have to realize American and Japanize Culture and Pop-culture are 180°. In Tokyo the 3 story porn shop isn't excesive, over here thats a little too much. 8-}

Oh the possibilities. I just hope whatever they come out with its resonably priced my wife will probably kill me if I buy $500 in MP- TF's.

Dang it why did I put her in charge of the checking account again?

Tfs as they might be, if they were targeted towards older kids and teens:

12 year old boy to his friend: Yeah, my big brother has that guy. He's so cool, I'm gonna ask my Mom for my own for Christmas. Dude, the cartoon rocks! He's just so cool, not like those other Transformer shows like they made for kindergarteners. I keep begging my Mom to let me stay up and watch it, I love seeing Prime kick Megatron's big metal butt.

Despite what some posters say, there aren't legions of kids that are fans of transformers. At least, not where I live. Where I live, kids completely ignore it. As a result, stores don't order any. If Transformers are made for kids, I don't get to have any.
StarWars isn't really marketed at kids because the core of the fanbase isn't kids. Transformers is marketed at Kids, despite the core of the fandom being adults. If I am wrong and kids really are the core of this fanbase, then please correct me. But I'm just not seeing it here. The only time I've ever seen a kid buying Transformers was on June 2, when the kid was accompanied by an adult who was grabbing one by one off the shelves (the kid looked bored to slag.)
I see no reason to market this franchise at kids.
And adult-marketed TFs does not neccesarily mean Kiss Players. It probably means more Masterpieces, Hybrid-Styles, and reissues. And maybe, just maybe, something more.

That's what happens where i live too...
And all my peers thought that TF is for kids and is outdated and childish.

What do you mean, kids dont like the Transfomers?

Maybe it's the Northeast or Britain or something, cause down here in Florida TF's are selling full blast. My online sources indicate that the Unicron series has been one of the most popular TF cartoons of recent years.

I say we need to do this true anime style and run both a shonen and a seinen series of the Transformers, perhaps reviving Transtech for the latter. You outlay double, but you potentially double your market.

Since the Unicron trilogy shows have been the only TF shows in recent years, I won't dispute what you said about them. And where in Florida are TFs selling fast? I live there too but storeworkers in my area all say that they just haven't been getting anything new in a long time and that the warehouses are completely empty of TFs. They don't even have old stock to put up like some stores have been doing.

Yeah, but that's where you live. They don't make the TV shows for adults. If you want Transformers aimed at Adults, there's always the comics. Kids are still loving Transformers here in New Zealand.

Must be something about South of the Equator, they love them here on the mainland too.

If there are not legions of kids after Transformers, then how on Earth can you explain the complete lack of proper Transformers (not the Slammers, Stompers, or even FAB's) on toy shelves?

The ones aimed at kids over the age of 8 are selling quicker than McDonalds Hotcakes on Mothers Day.

Oh, i thought people were buying up all the bots. And when i said more popular, i mean the show is doing better than during the Beast Era. At least, thats what ive read.

Either way I just hope they do something good along the lines of the Alternators line (even though we KNOW it is over) and continuing w/RARE G1 reissues (lets get to the Dinobots already) and continuing for a looong time the Masterpiece line too!

We'll see but I am not holding my breath.
