Getting started on TF comics

Postby cackman17 » Fri Jan 15, 2021 3:31 pm

Hey all-

Trying to keep it simple.....where should I start if I wanted to get started from the very beginning of the TF comic series, and then which route to take series by series.

My only criteria is I’m really into G1 and cartoon continuity (I know that’s backwards) so I’m looking for somewhere to start that will stay true to that genre and then I will let it take me from there.

Thoughts?

Well if G1 is your thing, start with the Marvel comics from the 80s to the early 90s. Those are the G1 comics and they ended with issue 80 in the US and issue 332 in the UK. I recommend the US series 1st, then the UK version if you have the patience. But remember, these comics are over 30 years old, the art doesn't hold up in some if the issues, especially in the UK version. What the UK version does have that the US version doesn't are a few good story arcs like Time Wars.

IDW has a long list of stories, and more or less they're pretty good. This forum has a thread with a list of comics in chronological order if you need a guide. I'm not sure when it was last updated though.

That’s great info- thanks!

Any idea what IDW issue I should look for?

I’m ok with “vintage” comic art. More or less interested in the story arc.

Curious if I could find used comics in the whole G1 series on line? Where would I start?

Well if you have the time and resources, start at the beginning with the Infiltration story line and go from there. But it is about 14 years worth of comics, so it could get expensive. There are soft reboots once in a while, such as All Hail Megatron in 2008 and More Than Meets The Eye in 2012 if you want to pick it up later. I recommend you hunt down the trade paperbacks, they should be fairly cheap and it's good to read these stories 5 or 6 issues at a time.

Well, eBay would be my first choice, you might find the entire run on there from one seller, but it'll cost you. That's if you insist on having all the single issues. If not, I recommend the Titan Books trade paperbacks, they're pretty good. I believe there are 12 of them and they include the entire US comic run. You can most likely find a list of the titles on Google easily.

If you don't want the physical books in your hand or don't mind reading online, I think there are a few places that still have the old comic scans. I recommend you contact board member Sabrblade about it, he knows much more than I do about the online aspects.

You can also check online comic book stores. Google comic book stores should give you a list

You can also try https://www.comicshoplocator.com/Retailer/StoreProfile/1837 to find a local comic book shop near you. Most comic book stores are small businesses and between the pandemic, and the sorry state of the economy in general most are really hurting and they need the help.
