Transformers (G1) vs. Go-Bots (Cartoon series of the same erra)

There is more to Transformers than movies, cartoons, comics and toys. Discuss anything else Transformers here.

Transformers (G1) vs. Go-Bots (Cartoon series of the same erra)

Postby Saber Prime » Fri Jun 15, 2007 3:58 am

I'm just currious because I can't actully remember anything about Go-Bots other than it was another series staring Transforming robots so maybe you can fill me in.

We're only compairing to G1 because it was the only incarnation of Transformers out at the time. Keep that in mind when you give your opinions.

What exactly made Transformers so much better than Go-Bots?

What would life be like today if Beast Wars, Beast Machines, RID, Armada, Energon, and Cybertron had all been based on Go-Bots insted of Transformers? Would every incarnation of the leaders be a Jet and a Motor Cycle named Leader-1 and Psykill?

I really remember NOTHING of Go-bots. Only reason I know the names at all is I looked them up after seeing the Preschool toys and my dad mentioning it use to be another cartoon like Transformers but wasn't really the same thing. So yeah any info you can give me on the differences between Transformers and Go-Bots would be good.

I can look up all the information I want but without actully remembering the series it's hard to have an opinion on something I can only read about so I'm asking for your opinions.

About the only big things I remember about it are....

They ALL shot lasers out of their hands. No one had blasters or anything.

No real serious storylines.

They had a spin-off from their only movie called GoBots: Battle of the Rock Lords. The spin-off toys were called Rock Lords: Powerful Living Rocks!

I was watching it the exact time the hospital called my grandmother (who was babysitting me) to tell her my sister had just been born.

In Go-Bots, I remember the black race car who was Cy-Kill's right-hand man (at least I thought he was), and he was kind of like Starscream when he's always mouthing off his leader. He was really weird because he had lipstick on and while he's on his car form, his head can pop out and he'd look really stupid.

I also remember the scooter guy who doesn't even bother hiding his face when he's in his alt mode. And I guess he was a Go-Bot kid.

I remember Cop-Tur kind of reminded me of Soundwave, but not cool. When he turns into a helicopter, he just looks down.

Leader-1 didn't even looked like a leader to me. And he looked like the Aerialbot Slingshot. I liked his transformation, though. The cockpit came from the back. I always thought that was kind of original.

I had a lot of memories of the Go-Bots when I was young. And they weren't even very good. I always thought that it was the same show as Transformers, but in different episodes (you know like Looney Tunes, where Bugs Bunny is the star of one episode, and Daffy Duck is the star of another, and the same with Porky Pig, etc). I've always wanted the Go-Bots and the Transformers to face-off, but eventually I found out that they were both completely different shows. Transformers still blows Go-Bots out of the water, though.

And that's what I think of the Go-Bots...

I take back what I said in my first post, I actully managed to find a few Go-Bot episodes on YouTube. (Didn't think there'd be any there)

Anyway that black car you mention can't be Cy-kill's right hand man because the black car is a woman. She looks like she's wearing lipstick and has a verry feminine voice, in fact it actully is a woman doing the voice. And  Peter Cullen and Frank Welker were both in the series and not as the leaders.

I allso see Michael Bell and Arthur Burghardt who are Transformers voices.

you had the Guardians(good guys)Leader-one(jet), turbo(car), and scooter(scooter), and the Renagades(bad guys)Cy-kill(motorcycle), Crasher(sports car), and Coptor(helicopter) as your main cast members! Yes Crasher was a woman!

Reasons why Gobots suck:

1.) They look more concerned with "Go"ing rather than "Transforming". They hardly change or transform their bodies between robot and alt. mode instead they just kind of flip over and turn into cr@p.

2.) The designs are unrealistic. Their robot modes suck like a drawing made by a one year-old and some of the alt. modes don't look like anything like they should. Cy-kill the motorcycle, for example, is cr@p; who would drive a motorcycle that looks like that.

3.) THEY JUST PLAIN SUCK!

Yeah but 'Cy-kill' is possibly the greatest name ever.

we're not debating wether they were better than TFs or not, cause common TFs are way cooler and always were, thats why they won the TF Vs Gobot battle back in the 80's!

Cy-Kill is the greatest villain in the history of ANYTHING. A lot of 80's cartoon villains failed at grandiose schemes, but only Cy-Kill had the skill and undeniable courage to fail at even the most mediocre of plans. Like the time he gathered all his Renegades and their tremendous army for the sole purpose... of cutting off power to Barstow, CA. Now, I don't want to be mean to anyone who lives there, but... if you're really just going to go with cutting off power to a single city, wouldn't... I dunno... L.A., San Fran, San Diego, or even Anaheim be more likely targets...?

Gobots is just tremendous goofy fun. A giant robot series by the company that did Flintstones, Jetsons, etc. It's an epic of awfulness... but at the same time, had a few characters that were a lot of fun. I still like Smallfoot. =p And, at its heart, it had a few interesting ideas. But the poor animation and individuals episodes killed it dead.

The toy line didn't help too much, either. While there were a lot of cool Gobots, there were a little bigger than the minibots. The larger scale figures were wonderfully detailed in their alt modes, but the robot modes were terrible. Most had just the car's passenger area as the "head". Imagine every figure in the line looking like Ironhide and Ratchet, and you've got a pretty decent idea of what's going on. They just didn't have the appeal of the G1 figures, overall.

Oh, and Cy-Kill coined "Excellent" as his tag phrase LONG before Mr. Burns. That's gotta count for something.

I used to watch both and I had a few Gobots (but many many more Transformers). Even as a kid I though the Gobots show was much more 'kiddie' than Transformers and not nearly as interesting. The characters were wooden and two-dimensional. Scooter was a Bumblebee wannabe who was more annoying that Wheelie. I did go see the Gobots movie (which made it into theaters before Transformers did). I only saw it once. I have two legit copies of Transformers the movie (and one pirated copy  ) and have watched it probably as much as any movie I have owned. But I will say this - the Gobots made great cannon fodder for my Transformers when I was playing with them : )

The toys were much better than the cartoon that was meant to pitch them. Had Gobots been given a better cartoon to work with, it would at least be a close rival (instead of a far second) to TF's. Still, as fellow transforming robots in the 80's goes, Gobots were still the closest rival TF ever had.

I will say this about Transformers vs. Gobots.

Both are really stupid names if you think about it. They're transforming robots and they're called Transformers. Gobots is stupid for entirly different reasons.

Transformers had better names for their characters. Had the Transformers been given Gobot names Optimus would be Leader-1, Bumblebee would be called Wa-gon (as in Volts Wagon), Jazz would be called Racer. Megatron would be called Gun, Soundwave would be Tape-deck, and Starscream would be Jet.

Transformers even with their human faces look more robotic than Gobots.

I do like that Cy-kill doesn't get held by his minions.

Pfft. The Mighty Orbots were second only to TFs. They beat the Go-Bots any day.

Um... actully they look about the same allthough if you compair with todays Transformers then hell yes. I prefer the human looking humans from G1 and Go-bots not the crazy anime looking humans from recent shows.

Animation styal aside G1 humans are just all around better (except that they had names I thought didn't sound human, I'm looking at you Sparkplug) Carly is definatly the only female human in the Transformers universe that I like. All girls in Anime act like 40 year old mothers to all the boys in the series of the same age. (I hate the 15 year old girls who think they know everything.)
