His alt mode is the weakest IMO but torso and bot mode are spectacular.
The whole team is really growing on me the more i look at them. Well done Hasbro.
I can't believe i'm buying a Defensor

Honestly, disagree. The heavy retoolings are a massive improvement over the previous status quo, in my opinion, and have enabled a wide range of surprisingly unique character portrayals in the Combiner Wars.
Plus, that Hot Spot mold is begging, just begging, to be Onslaught.

So, no Onslaught period, then?

Ah, I see. You want an additional mold. Well, then. Which other figure(s) shall we not get then? Molds are expensive to produce, and personally, if they can get multiple uses out of them, as long as the molds make sense for the character, I'm all for it! Because the alternative isn't more new molds, it is less toys altogether. So if you want Onslaught to have his own mold, then tell me which Voyager class Combiner Wars mold you'd like to not have, instead, please.
If they can remold and repaint Hot Spot into a credible Onslaught, then bring it on.

There's enough on hotspot that can be retooled extensively for onslaught, similar to silverbolt and Cyclonus. You can debate if it works, but you can't deny despite having the same base, most of their details are completely different.

But how do you know that Hotspot isn't the retool of Onslaught? Just because he was put into production and distribution before doesnt mean he was the character this mold was originally designed for. Due to how flat the alt mode is, I really feel this was originally designed as Onslaught's.
We have proof of this kind of thing happeneing as far back as the alternators line and we are clearly seeing it with all the extra limb bots in Combiner Wars. Another good example was the Generations Megatron/g2 Dreadwing mold.
So just wanted to say that for all we know, we are looking at the retool already.

With pre-planned retools "whoever came second is the retool" loses all validity, as more than one figure is designed with the same base at the same time. Instead we should be asking who the base characters are. For Hot Spot vs. Onslaught, it can still be either or as both had a lower rear bed with a higher cab. RiD Optimus Prime had a similar shape no less, so such a shaped vehicle has been seen before.

I disagree. I'm hoping they surprise us with someone we'd never expect. If it was me, I'd make it Smolder to see the looks on people's faces (and pad out a case assortment.)

I would buy the $#!+ out of Smolder. Still, it is going to be Onslaught. Regardless, the planned retooled are phenomenal. Looking at the prototypical one, Springer/Sandstorm, you can hardly tell you have the same figure. Same goes for every CW pretool figure so far. This is infinitely better than New-Head-At-Best recolor.

Don't forget we received news that Silverbolt will get another heavy retool into Scattershot (very curios about how that will look).
And a number of us have been speculating on further retools of molds like Offroad getting a further retool into Swindle (4th use by my count), Rook retooled into Brawl and Nosecone, Alpha Bravo heavily retooled into Blast Off (unfortunately Blades and Vortex are only getting new paint and heads), Skydive getting retooled into Strafe and Dead end getting another retool into Lightspeed (possibly a fourth reuse if Prowl will be a redeco of Streetwise with a new head).
And I fully expect a retool of Hotspot into Fire Convoy / RID Optimus Prime by Takara, Hasbro or both as a third use of the mold.

I think Defensor may be my birthday present this year. Unfortunately I'll have to pass on Mirage and Ironhide. Unless they blow me away too.
