Why is there so much hate towards Alpha Bravo, but people are perfectly fine with Powerglide being an Aerialbot, when he wasn't an Aerialbot back in the day?
I'm more then a few pages behind on this thread, so I am sure this question has long since been answered, debated, and moved on from by now... but I wished to dredge it back up for a moment to give my own personal answer.
Superion is made of five individual robots. In any version of Superion, Powerglide is not one of those five robots.
Where Alpha Bravo
replaced one of the original five, Powerglide's being added to the Aerialbot roster is as an extra, supplemental member who is not at all necessary to form Superion. He can become an extra gun for Superion to hold. If Powerglide isn't around, Superion still has his own gun. So Powerglide is hardly essential.
Also, you can add Powerglide without having to take anyone else away. You can't say the same of Alpha Bravo. For him to be on the team, someone else had to go. And for me, personally, as someone who doesn't read comic books, and who knows the Aerialbots from the 80's cartoon and toy line, and as someone who's Transformers collection is mainly about recreating that with modern toys, I want a Superion who
doesn't have any of the original members missing. Extra members? Sure, why not? But not if they come at the expense of an existing one.
Powerglide is a fun toy. And he works well in robot and vehicle mode. I probably won't even use his gun mode that often, or even likely keep him on the same shelf as the main Aerialbot team. He's currently on a shelf with other "1985 Autobots," and, of course, the original Aerialbots came out in '86.
I'm sure Alpha Bravo is a fun toy, too. If there weren't other options for Superion, I might have sucked it up and gotten him. If there weren't going to be other options to get the mold, I might also have gotten him. I do look forward to getting Blades. And for those that are more into the current comic continuity, I am very happy that we are both able to get the Superion we want.
But the fact of the matter is, I got Powerglide because I wanted Powerglide. His being able to form a gun for Superion is just a superfluous bonus. I'm not getting Alpha Bravo because I don't feel I need him. His being a helicopter has nothing to do with it. His not being Slingshot does.
