While we're on the subject of Ultra Magnus, I think this one's a prime example of why gimmicks are not necessarily bad. If it weren't for Minimus Ambus in the driver's seat (and, to a lesser degree, the hammer made of guns), this figure would be a lot less interesting.
Poor UM, still has the negative rep of not being the "Chosen One"
Seriously, is it that too hard or expensive to create a core robot transformation sequence for a UM?
It's not that I have anything against Ultra Magnus (His Prime incarnation, in particular, is pretty badass for someone with a huge stick up his exhaust port).
It's just that the toy would have otherwise been just another G1 rehash, and probably overshadowed to hell and back by his Masterpiece counterpart, but the gimmicks I mentioned made it unique.
For the record, Magnus has wound up being the only Leader-class Generations figure I've been interested in so far, so I'm certainly not intending to diss him.
Peace NP. Nothing against you per se. I used to think that way too about UM, the disposable but very handy guy to have around. But listening to a commentary by the TF creators changed that. The character really got to be second fiddle.
Also, disappointed that again, instead of a core semi truck transforming into a robot, we get a core pilot

To seperate Ultra Magnus from being a white Prime Dreamwave first established that it was a smaller robot in the armour.
IDW took that notion and expanded on it.
I would have loved a detachable cab that becomes its own individual robot. For years we got UM's that had the cab just become part of the robot, ignoring the whole small robot in an armour idea, but we got that with CW UM and as a UM fanboy, I'm happy with it!

Imagine if they did that with the MP Magnus though - MP-10 Cab AND the trailer, which if they did it "right" would either transform almost exactly as it does now for the "Powered" version (with the trailer) or just the cab and have another white Optimus....fenrir72 wrote: Same question too...is it that hard to do a core robot transform sequence? Now, imagine the cost of that...

Thinking along those lines, I'm OK with the price of CW Magnus and how much friendlier it is to my wallet

Thank you Kanrabat and ScottyP for the help! I just needed to restart my computer a few times. Must have looked to make sure he was in stock and my discount still worked so much I broke Hasbrotoyshop on my laptop
I cannot wait for him to arrive, and cyclonus too. He looks really amazing. I love the IDW Magnus and the Minimus storyline too. That's pretty sick.
I Have only seen the Armada Megatron leader class. I never saw Jetfire (online order) and the rest have not been seen. And I want that Megs too!
And Ultra Magnus is still in stock at HTS. Give him some love people! This is Cybertrons Greatest Warrior and the kickass 2nd in command of the Lost Light!

i must have missed those. I seem to recall that for years the Magnuses we've been getting have either been white Primes with no trailer or Magnuses with no inner robot at all. The only ones that involve a smaller robot are RiD 2001 Ultra Magnus (Super version, Basic still follows pattern), who becomes armor for Optimus to form Omega Prime, and Energon Ultra Magnus who, due to being a recolor of Overload, has his Mini-Con Knock-Out as his head and chest.

Animated, War for Cybertron, even Kabaya had the cabs incorporated and no smaller bot.
I didn't think RiD Magnus had a smaller bot did he? I thought cab and trailer all combined. (Haven't played with him lately)

That's how I remember him. Really, the only one that I recall having the inner white Prime robot was G1, right?

At that point, it's ultra magnus as a combiner, not small robot in armor ultra magnus.

Interestingly, Armada Overload was initially conceived as Ultra Magnus. It's not known why they changed it.

I've often suspected it was because at the time, Hasbro were trying to crack down on early reveals and they did it out of spite.
I like to think of Armada Ultra Magnus as a bit of an inspiration for CW Ultra Magnus, little bot combining with his trailer to become a bigger bot.

Yeah, misread. But if I had been competant, I might have pointed out that a number of Magnuses consist solely of the cab on its own, even the ones that aren't just white Prime

It's a variation on the theme. RiD Prime is small robot in armor, and Magnus becomes alternate armor for the small robot. Not the same, admittedly, but close.

Sorry to join in on the conversation so late, but I am so glad to see such love for Magnus. I think he is a great addition to the mythos and brings out the more military side to the autobot forces, reminding you that there is a war and die hard soldiers involved in it.
I never understood why this author chose to have Magnus be the worst character of all time on his list: http://www.x-entertainment.com/messages/547.html
While I would never do a Worst G1 character article how could I), I sure wouldn't ut Magnus first.

Best guess is cuz Armada isn't as popular as G1 so fewer people have a boner for it than G1.LegendaryAntiHero wrote:Then why don't we get more AEC inspired designs in every carton after the movies came out?
However, its legacy lives on in the concept of Mini-Cons, which the new RID line and show do have to an extent.

Truly?
Is this real life?
I rate my level of excite somewhere between "Johnny Long Dong" and "Long Dick Willie". This is all highly technical, I know.

Magnus really is a cool character. The movie really did not do him enough justice. His main role that I recognize him for is the IDW More Than Meets The Eye comic, Prime and Animated. When given proper writers and setting, he really is a badass, and I love him for that

Because they decided to stick with the initial intention of the design for their own release.
Hasbro also designed Hotshot as bumblebee at first but also changed it. Takara could have called it bumblebee but didnt. It wouldnt have meant that they came up with him.

Japan did a lot of things with Micron Densetsu differently from what Hasbro did with Armada. Tidal Wave was called "Shockwave" and given a more Shockwave-y deco like in the show. Smokescreen was called "Grap", as a nod to his altmode and orange color being like Grapple. Hot Shot was called "Hot Rod", thus explaining his very Rodimus-esque Powerlinx redeco. Cyclonus was called "Sandstorm", being a helicopter like the G1 Triple Changer. Demolishor was called "Ironhide", which explained his very G1 Ironhide-esque Powerlinx redeco. Nemesis Prime was called "Scourge" as a nod to Car Robots Black Convoy's English name. And for just basic naming differences, there were the following:
- Optimus Prime -- Convoy
- Red Alert -- Ratchet
- Scavenger -- Devastor (G1 Devastator's Japanese name)
- Blurr -- Silverbolt
- Side Swipe -- Stepper
- Galvatron -- Megatron Super Mode (the name "Galvatron" would be held in reserve for Energon Megatron)
- Wheeljack -- Rampage
- Sideways -- Doubleface
