Business decision: Keeping trademarks upto date.
In-universe lore: Namesakes exist across the franchise.

Example: Beast Wars Megatron. From series lore, took the name of his Decepticon ancestor. He had more depth and characterisation in 3 (or 5, technically) seasons of that show than the G1 originator of the name, at that time. TLDR: Same name. Completely different characters. Sharing some visual characteristics.

No one would confuse G1 Rodimus Prime with UT Rodimus and/or IDW Rodimus. So if that's not the issue, what is?

Sad reality is that character and story rehashes are the way to go nowadays, instead of continuing the same thread like a 20-year-old soap opera. And sooner or later all multi-year running lines get to experience it. He-Man, TMNT, MLP, Super Sentai/Power Rangers, they all do that.

You can add the Movieverse to the mix. Just with Hound. AoE/TLK Hound was a mix of Kup and Ironhide and had nothing to do character-wise with G1 Hound appart having a military vehicle altmode.

Like on Earth, there's multiple William Richard Johnson out there. ;)

Funny you mention Power Rangers since the rumor is that this year's season, Cosmic Fury, will be the final season of the series in its current form before Hasbro takes a break next year and reboots it all from the ground up in 2025.

Super Sentai's been going on since the 70s. King-Ohger is currently the 47th one.

And Sesame Street is still going, currently in its 54th year.

Super Sentai shows and magical girls shows like Pretty Cure always "reboot" themselves each year with different characters in a different universe. They are also merchandizing infomercials. So it's not surprising.

The Simpsons, Family Guy, South Parks, have the same characters for years who are immortal, non-aging, despite the fact that the world around them do age and go forward. Which make these show more and more bizarre as the DECADES goes by.

There should have been a point, especially in the Simpsons. Wherein they should have put a line in the sand and performed a time skip. It's a trope that can go very wrong. But the family dynamic should have moved forward and evolved at some stage over the last 30+ years!

In most cases, the key to survival is to grab new audiences as the old ones grow out, and hope that the old audiences help introduce the new younger audiences to the still-going series.

It's basically what Transformers has been doing since Beast Wars (well, technically since Generation 2, but that wasn't as much of a success).

I've always wondered what the reception would have been if HasTak actually marketed and animated G2. In all it's Neons and 90's edge glory!

The grim 'n gritty edgelords would have eaten it up, but all those who long for the days of G1 Seasons 1-2 would have bawked at it just as they had bawked at G1 Season 3 and TFTM's killing off Optimus Prime.

I really, REALLY want that.
Especially when Optimus Prime would begin with just having a black trailer with extra gizmos to evolving/upgrading into Lazer Optimus Prime.

Then, the grand finale, Optimus and Megatron team up in their final form, their HERO form, to defend the universe against the greatest menace, the ultra lame Unicron! But this time around, he wear shades, have a bot mode that remind the late 1970's fashion with bell-bottom pants, and he transform into a DISCO BALL! His evil goal is to bring back the late 1970s disco culture by destroying the hip, rad and neon 1990s one! 8-)

Of course, such a G2 cartoon would have been subject to much scrutiny by both parents and network censors to ensure that it met the network's broadcast standards and practices for children's television, as was the case for the likes of Batman, X-Men, Spider-Man, Savage Dragon, Street Fighter, Wild CATs, Gargoyles, ReBoot, The Legend of Prince Valiant, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, and any anime dubbed for the FOX and WB networks.

The 90s were a fierce time for censors and parents trying to regulate violence on children's television.

Then again, Hasbro will never Okay a Transformers show with the maturity, violence and tone of HBO Spawn. It's why I doubt there will ever be a Last Stand of the Wreckers animated adaptation.

Oh, but remember when Machinima's Combiner Wars was called "the Game of Thrones of animation" by its creators? Probably just because it had a couple of mild swear words? Good times.

TF:TM definitely pushed the envelope of the PG rating back in 1986. But the level of action in that film was well intense enough to provide a satisfying story without going too far, and not being too childish. The Prime TV series came the closest to this, while offering the same level of storytelling and animation. Nothing has come close since. I'd definitely like another TF series on that level.
Bucket/Want List: Botcon 2016 Customization Class Ratchet (G2 Deco), or Customization Class Ratchet (Marvel Comics Deco) **would also be willing to pay for an Unpainted Botcon 2016 Ratchet, TT Legends Fortress Head (only) with working Electronics

Sentai has had a few breaks over the years, usually after a season doesn't perform well, it's the same thing with Kamen Rider.

Funny enough there have been at least two soft reboots to The Simpsons over the years. The latest was a couple of years ago that made the adults of Springfield YOUNGER than the viewers who have watched the show since day one.

There have been plenty of chances for The Simpsons to end gracefully. Season 30 should definitely have been it. Now it won't end until one of the main cast members dies, which is sad. Oddly enough some shows that went away for 20+ years then were brought back, albeit in a not quite right zombified form ( Anumaniacs for instance) remind me. If the Simpsons has gone away for a long time then was brought back for a revival, the current episodes would fit the description perfectly.

Getting this back to TFs and other franchises where the format changes on a regular basis, that is an easier way to keep things going.

Wish List of Modern Combiners: Road Caesar, Monstructor & Dinoking (proper size to fiction), Landcross, Guard City, Battle Gaia, & G2 Defensor. Wish List of Titans:Metrotitan,Majin Zarak

Legacy would be a great format for a Transformers anthology series. One off episodes or mini series based on the lesser known/explored parts of the franchise. Transtech, Machine Wars, Marvel Run, Dreamwave, Devil's Due, IDW etc The comics have all had at least one story that would be really cool to see in motion. Giving a proper finale to the cancelled projects too EG Animated.

The line already exists to support the show, after all.

I remember shortly after the Legacy toyline started, it was said that Hasbro pitched a Legacy animated series to Netflix, but they said no, most likely because the War for Cybertron cartoon didn't turn out that great. But dping something with TransTech sounds cool, even if they just homage those old designs in an unrelated series.
