First Gen wrote:HA, I have NEITHER Blu Ray or HD so take that TOSHIBA.
In reality im just a poor bastard who'd rather spend his money on TF's and my boy rather than a PS3 that will be obsolete faster than the time it took me to earn the money to buy it.

Sony say they expect the PS3 to have a 10 year life cycle. Of all the Blu Ray players the PS3 is probably the LEAST likely to become obsolete as its firmware is easily updated. The Blu Ray software has already been upgraded at least once to accomodate the picture in picture feature found on some of the recent discs.

With all due respect Ravage, I expect to get a raise at work soon. As I've expected it for some time now. I also expect some other more advanced for of player to come out much sooner than 10 years, making any updates more than irrelevant.
Don't get me wrong. PS3 is kick ass, but there's always something better on the horizon. Which is why I still love and play my old PS2.
Ravage XK wrote:I read your post to imply that the PS3 would be obsolete in 10 years, it may be but we have to go with what Sony tell us. It seems that you meant that the Blu Ray format would be obsolete within 10 years. That is probably true, tech now moves very quickly. Look at TV sets, for years it was Black and White then you got the option of colour, then widescreen, then LCD and plasma, then HD. Soon OLED will become mainstream and there are even higher resolution formats being developed.
Thing is at some point people will say enough is enough and wont welcome yet another new format.
Oh and good luck with your pay rise.
'Ravage XK wrote:To be honest I dont think that there is really that much in it. Blu Ray has more storage space ( i think ) but it also has tighter DRM ( not that it really matters, its already been cracked, I'm sure I read that somewhere ).
Wikipedia has some articles on both formats, see the HD DVD one here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD
I dont know how you have your system set up so I cannot comment on it but I dont have any problems viewing standard def stuff on my HD screen, some older programs can look worse than others. I caught an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation at the weekend and it looked washed out but that may be the broadcast media. The screen has an internal decoder for digital tele and the PS3 up-scales DVDs to 720p or 1080i and are transmitted over the HDMI cable and they look great.
I would sing the praises of an up-scaling DVD player to anyone with a HD screen, it makes a world of difference.
