Can different tooling really save this though? This just looks ;like the wrong approach to transformation if you want 3 modes. Ideally, you should have the wings serving double duty for the carrier halves, with folded panels to give the wings a different shape. And it is baffling how some fake kibble is only seen in robot mode. For all the parts that need a double duty, they waste the shoulders on random detail that serves no purpose in any mode. So with everything in the top half being used independently for the 2 modes, they are stuck cramming the rest of the plane into a very little area and so there is very little room for anything convincing.

This was not a smart approach to the figure.

Gotta agree, as is alpha trion is a better ship than broadside is a jet, I honestly don't have any problems with a3 at all, worth every penny

I have problems with the sides of his ship at the back. Those lion half heads. They dont really work and remove that shape the ship is forming. I tried doing it so that they are raised with the horn acting as a tail fin but that doesnt work either. I really love his landing gear though.

Eh, they really don't look like lion heads, just big chunky engine components, it's just that you know it's a lion, so it becomes more noticeable

Oh, I didnt mean that they look like lion heads, they just dont work with the rest of the look for me. Especially since it also exposed the hands.

Yes, that is the intended configuration, the arms hook into cavities in the legs. Do I have a problem with it? Not really, who says it's supposed to be like a real life jet? Heck, it looks more aerodynamic than some of the boxes with wings we have. And it's not like it's unprecedented, look at a certain black transforming jet a few pages back.

Who's idea was it to make Broadside a carrier back in G1 anyway?

I think the main offender here - despite seemingly obvious appearances - is the placement of the wings. I could buy the idea of a much bulkier-looking jet like this if the wings were placed somewhere in the middle; as is, putting them right at the bottom just makes it look ridiculous.

The wing placement isn't as you say ridiculous. Simplifying his Transform mode (jet version) is that he is lying on his back (robot mode) with his legs in a sitting position. With the wings serving as part of the flatbed for the Carrier mode (which is just as awesome), you'd be hard put to put the wings anywhere else.

If Takara would/could find a way to harmonize the colors, then the jet would colors would look more appealing. Carrier's colors are spot on. Also, well the Jet mode have no landing gears. Yes, he doesn't have any landing gears. Omitted to cut cost?

While the carrier has like two collapsing struts to give him a hydrofoil like appearance (also has that middle wing that serves as a rudder(?) or some sort space navigational device in the anime.Iirc, there was an episode where Arcee, Rodimus and Kup were using Broadside to travel in an asteroid field or something.

I haven't even taken the time to inspect whether or not Broadside's jet mode sucks.
I've been way too busy marveling at how AWESOME Brawn and Topspin look!

Hmm, I think you might be right! Sadly my computer trashed itself last month and I don't have Photoshop any more, but thanks to the power of MS PAINT I present:

A slightly better-looking Broadside!

Not that there's any way this could actually be achieved on the figure as-is, it'd have to have been a change made in the design stage, but at least it's nice to know what (part of) the problem is.

Yeah, that... that kind of works, actually!
I mean, it's not great, you have to be really into the aesthetic and it's hard not to use the word 'passable' when trying to say it's not bad... but it's a damn sight better than what we have.

For me I'm just going to justify the jet mode as a big heavy bomber type vehicle befitting his role as a Wrecker so while it can fly in the air he can't fly very fast or maneuver in the air that well but the trade off is that he can take a lot more punishment the normal flyers and can dish up ridiculous amounts of damage through artillery and missile bombardments.

Which is why he has small wings and all that junk in the trunk for a better example of what I mean google up a video of a Halo Wars Vulture and watch a little gameplay so he acts like that just a little faster then that since he is an actual jet.

Kinda wanted to see how it would look if the wings matched the body of the plane more. Gotta say I like this dark grey.

Heh, originally the grey smudge was actually just me using my ""professional"" photo manipulation ""skills"" to fill in the blank space left by the wing when I moved it (just color-selected the background and waved the paintbrush tool over top of the empty white space). But you're totally right, he does look even better with those bigger wings!

I just like "accidentally" visited the local TRU and voila, scored a "62841/ #CO286" figure (those who own one by checking his butt knows who I mean ). The only one from his lot case to be exact .

Trying to hold off for an eventual Takara release but he is so awesome that I was overcome by my TF instincts.

A great update of his G1 incarnation you get six times the bang for your buck!. Sure the Titanmaster figure was so plain underpainted (the homunculi part) but the teal color worked well enough to show the figure's details unlike the gray of Blunderbuss.

I wonder if Takara will attempt a retool for this mold so that Blackshadow can finally get to fight his "pursuer" in Victory.

I think it looks more balanced because the fuselage area (the middle part) is so chunky. Bigger wings make it look more stable.

This is turning into Broadsidegate, but it does look better with the wings like that
