The helmet is more generic than any fictional rendition with less pronounced antenas (and a very receded face). It looks more like the G1 version, which had a generic face and head



Also, they chose to totally break up the more uniform blue on his chest (which is darker in the fiction too, but that too is from the toy) by making the flaps white instead of blue with a coloured design inside to replicate the smaller figures. I am realizing how close the IDW design is to the Masterforce design, which is great!

I will reiterate what I said but if Hasbro just wants to copy the G1 toy so much (and even then, the chest colours are wrong), they are better off just rereleasing it, especially since the US and Canada never got that toy.

Though of course, there is a pretty good reason for this that I'm surprised no-one brought up until now.

There are, as far as I can tell, no molding differences between Overlord's face and Sky Shadow's face.

As far as I can tell they literally used the same head between each character despite the impressive amount of remolding found elsewhere on the toy. Which... which is just really sad.

That might be so you can use Giga and Mega as Overlord's face. Which I realise is the very good reason you mention in your opening sentence. Hehe.

That's admittedly a positive I didn't see from the start... but considering there's no molding differences between the Titan Masters, the fact this is a pretty loose gimmick, the fact you have to buy two leaders of the same mold for this to work, and the fact that this is what they sacrificed not having unique faces between each character to not better represent them... gotta say, overwhelming amount of negatives outweighing the positives here. Especially when the only time they haven't molded a new face in the line so far was from Crashbash to Overboard.

Dont know what you are talking about, the faces have different molding. It is most obvious when loking at the outer rime:



Also, does anyone know if that face for G2 prime is the same as the regular prime one? And we still dont know the face that comes with magnus Prime right?

May just be me...but way back when I actually had owned the original Overlord at two different times (had the Italian release for a while, then the Japanese one...) But the colors look pretty much the same to me. White chest flaps on both, and the blue is pretty close to the original. I'm not one to nitpick over hues and slight differences, is there some MAJOR difference I'm missing?

... oh. Huh. Didn't see that render; was just comparing Ominus' render with the showroom photos. My bad.
Though it is rather... odd that they were molded so similarly. Same eye shape, same mouth, almost the same chinguard and nose... it's kind of eerie. Ominous, even.

It's kind of an off white, but yeah, I just think the pics you referenced had light that made them look more gray (or maybe they were slightly gray...), but I remember there was a lot of white on Overlord. If you look at pics online in some they look very white, and in some they look darker. Also, some toys (the well played with ones) suffered from a "yellowing" effect over time, which one of my Overlords had, which is what makes me think perhaps they were a shade of white initially...I could be wrong, but the difference either way is minimal between the original and TR IMHO.

Ok fine, this toy is just the straight up g1 toy colouring. Previous arguments still stand as to how the IDW and Cartoon version work better for me due to the more uniform chest colours, but at least I get what hasbro is doing. Thanks

I just looked at those Masterforce screencaps, and I think the cartoon has those flaps too, they're just weirdly attached to the arms.

Overlord's chest flaps were always open, never closed, in the cartoon.

HA! And IDW recreates that look wth extra detail on his shoulders that resemble the open flaps:



No wonder the white chest looked weird to me, I know overlord mainly through the fiction and the pics of the toy I always saw seemed to go for that look too. I was looking at the other ways I saw this toy before and even the packaging is all about open flaps:

Well, there is a GREAT news then, we can recreate that look with the TR toy:



Now my only complaint is the head but that might dissipate soon too. I was really down on that Soundave when it was first revealed (as were many, more so than Overlord) but I grew to like him a lot. So ignore me for now, I am going through the fan notions of acceptance.

PS: I still think Black Shadow looks cooler and his face seems better integrated with the helmet, which works wonders.

Was I seeing things or did I see a new mold Pipes under Overlords foot at Toy Fair?

I don't see a Pipes anywhere.

The first shelf has Leaders, the second the Voyagers, and the bottom one has the Deluxes, including Topspin and Twintwist. The only Legends and Titan Masters on show were Overboard, Repugnus, Ramhorn (retool of Shuffler based on an unused design), Roadburn aka Chase and Seaspray.
