I never had the figure myself, but I think a little bit of nostalgia is rosening up some collectors' glasses on the toy, honestly. It's big and chunky, yes, but it's also very basic in its transformation, not especially well articulated, and way too heavy for its own good, especially in Super Mode. At least we know the upcoming SIEGE homage will have ankle tilts! There are parts and panels that don't really seem to "clip" into place, like the side windows of the cab and the "wings" when folded up into trailer mode. The loss of the "flight mode" seems to be no big deal either, as it looks even more ridiculous than the "plane mode" on Titans Return Voyager Optimus Prime with the primary wings stuck on the back end of the fuselage.
I don't think so, everyone (myself included) has been pretty up front about it's flaws, and it has them too. But the thing I think has everyone excited is:
-It's not G1 (trust me g1 fatigue is real and as it encroaches on other lines (ss for one) it's only going to get worse)
-The original is an extremely fun toy, and that people still want it is a testament to how it holds up
-It's not a 'g1 with knee's' scenario, its a completely different take on a figure that technically needed no updating (I'd argue that a reissue with better ratchets is warranted) so it's not necessarily competing against it's older counterpart
-It's a more budget-friendly option for newer collectors to obtain, remember cybertron came out almost
15 years ago, the movies and shows that came out after it, ushered in so many new collectors that had missed out on this gem (and many other), so now they have a chance to get
a version of it to experience;
So all in all, I think this is not only going to be a fun toy that many collectors are going to want for a wide reaching number of reasons, but also offers a small breath of fresh air from the stringent g1-itude of the line, which is something we all need every now and then.
