Two Movie Questions

Postby starfish » Sun Jan 13, 2008 8:15 am

1) Where does Devastator/Brawl's main central cannon go when he's in robot mode?

2) Why did the Sector 7 and the Autobots take the Allspark to a big city? Didn't they realise the Decepticons would follow them and cause all that damage? Why not lure them to an unpopulated desert or somwhere, to avoid human casualties (IMHO it made no sense in story terms, but in cinematic terms it made a cool ending to have Transformers fighting it out in the streets).

I think the main cannon barrel goes to the waist. Just like the Leader toy.

Bay always wants to move away from G1. Bringing the battle to an unpopulated desert or open space will make it a typical G1 fight scene. So, however illogical the idea of military guys bringing the fight into a populated city, as long as it deviates from the cartoon versions, Bay will go for it.

Looking at the movie scene again, it looks like the main barrel shrinks away behind Devastator/Brawl's back. It's certainly not visible in robot mode from what I can see.

And I'm not sure about your theory that Michael Bay was keen to shy away from G1 references. There's the character names, of course, plus a number of homages, such as the "One shall stand..." line, Prime's voice and motto, and the Jazz/Brawl fight that deliberately references the Kup/Blitzwing fight in the animated movie.

And plus, I can recall a whole shedload of G1 episodes that took place in cities. 'City of Steel', 'Megatron's Master Plan', 'Dinobot Island' (especially the cliffhanger to part 1) and 'Atlantis, Arise!", just to name a few off the top of my head.

Sure, it DOES make a cool setting for the end of the story, but it rides roughshod over the Autobots' personalities (they surely would have had qualms about moving the fight to a populated area).

It's just a shame they couldn't have found a better rationale for moving the story to the city. (Perhaps Frenzy could have stolen the Allspark and fled to the city, where the Autobots would've had no choice but to give chase).

The shetloads of homages is a necessity. Otherwise, Bay will be lynched, skinned alive, and burned on a stake.

But Bay manages to keep down the homages to tiny little pieces, scattered all over the movie, however numerous it may be.

But not to major scenes.

They moved it to the city to use it as a reference point and any needed resources in the area.

What is easier to find a handful of people out in a vast desert or them on top of a tall building in a known city ?

Who would want to see the final battle of the movie take place in some desert, I would feel cheated myself in a way to think that they spent 150 million dollars and it ends with a wrestling match in the sand, we already had that in the Scorponok battle scene and it was awesome don't get me wrong but that was specific to the region it was taking place in Iraq so we did not need to see it twice especially for the climactic battle scene.

The fight in L.A. was not easy to get permission to do let alone all the work it took to render all the bots over the buildings and even all the buildings had to be mapped out and rendered as well on the computer, it's in the dvd extras.

I think the logic of going to a city (according to Trans Wikia) is that, unlike the desert, there might be a chance of getting some form of communication (as was the case with the short-wave radios)

What should really bake your noodles is.. why did Prime even agreed to bash it out in the city.

After all his righteous "protect the humans", "we don't harm humans" wranglings.

Simple.

Radio Bumblebee, who by the way has the cube, to head for an unpopulated location. And, yeah, drop off Sam and Mikaela somewhere along the way.

The main logic of this movie anyway, is for the Autobots to retrieve the cube, and protect the humans.

Not to ask humans to protect them.

So, with or without the necessity of self sacrifice, he should divert the battle away from the humans. Not get any one of them involved as much as possible, whether the humans insisted on helping or not.

He never asked them to fight it out in the city as he and the other autobrats had not even arrived there yet, he came in after they had arrived with the cube and Megatron and the other Decepticons were already there and we never saw or heard them communicating with each other with Prime telling them to avoid the city.
Bumblebee simply followed the human military decision to take the cube to the city, this is after all Earth it takes place on so it should have been a humans decision or at least have a say in it.

Prime can easily see that they're heading to the city. With several Decepticons tailing them. (He even fought one of them.)

With the imminent catastrophe in mind, he should have deviated or contradicted the human command (such as what he did when he trashed the S-7 vehicle), and dish out his own orders to the Autobrats and move out of the city at once.

Alternatively, he can head towards the stadium, or cemetery, or anywhere with almost no people around.

Ok before this turns into a flame war let me just say this.

This IS a blockbuster.

The city would have more of a dramatic feel than sand stirring and not much damage to the area.

Just my two cents.

But the events leading to the fight in an unpopulated area will involve less humans. Which can be nice too. Although, we'll never know.

i thought they take it there to hide it in the miriad energy sigitures and buildings so its hard to find.

Its hardly hiding in plain sight if its in a desert.

makes the ending good whatever.

You'll need a structure at least as massive a the Hoover dam to hide its signature. The city buildings, power lines, and people won't do any help to that.

i suppose it could confuse to some degree.

Anyway they say the same concept in the film. In other words of course.

At the expense of countless innocent lives and massive collateral damage?

Those soldiers are not thinking as soldiers. They're thinking as actors.

I HAVE to use that as a new addition to my sig! That's good! And plus, that would be funny yet tragic (because we would have no director for TF2) if that happened! Not that I think that MB dying is funny. :|
