Our look at the 1987 range of Generation 1 Transformers continues this week with the three basic Decepticon Headmasters Skullcruncher, Mindwipe and Weirdwolf. While the Autobot Headmasters introduced in the same year were land and air vehicles, the Decepticon counterparts were beasts. 1987 also saw the release of Decepticon Headmaster base Scorponok and Headmaster Horrorcons Apeface and Snapdragon, but we will cover those three in a future article. The plan was originally to release four basic Decepticon Headmasters to face off against the Autobots, but plans for the stingray Decepticon Headmaster were canned. Here then is our look at Skullcruncher the crocodile with Headmaster Grax, Weirdwolf the wolf with Nebulon partner Monzo, and Mindwipe the bat with Headmaster partner Vorath.

I had actually forgotten there were only three Headmasters as opposed to four for the Autobots. A stingray one? Ah, that would've been quite cool!

That lost concept for a forth Decepticon Headmaster beast would make for a great new character for Hasbro to implement if the Headmaster rumors about the upcoming "Titan Wars" subline pan out.

There were five. You forget the Horrorcons Snapdragon and Apeface. Both are headmasters of the first gen release.

So that makes 6 Autobot Headmasters to 6 Decepticons.

I decided to lump Snappy, Apeface and Scorp into a sort of Decep HM triplechanger article somewhere down the line when I finally get an Apeface box

Almost all the 'cons HM were beastformers except for the Horrorcons which also had mech modes (jets) While the Autobot were all "tech" modes ( transport of buildings) all the way towards the HM Jr. lines. Heck, just also noticed that small trivia.
