20th Prime vs 20th DVD Prime
So, I looked at the galleries a bit, and noticed a few difference between the two such as the gun. But is one of them a lot better quality wise or anything. Can't get too much on that from the pic gallery. I know I missed the bus on the regular 20th, but was looking for a little comparison to decide if I buy the DVD one or figure out another gameplan if it is far inferior.

DVD Prime lacks chrome (which I actually prefer, but a lot of people seem to see this as a negative) and his eyes aren't shiney like 20th Prime. As far as I know, the mold is the same, and DVD Prime is a brick compared to the other MPs. If you see him on sale somewhere, definitely something to pick up as you can always do a repaint to add the chrome and shiney eyes...and fix his somewhat retarded blue gun.

Thanks for the info. If those are the main differences, I will go ahead and pick up the DVD version if I find him on sale again.

To me there is another BIG difference: the colour. If you look again you may see that there appears to be a more orangey colour to DVD Prime's red. Some people feel that it's closer in colour to the anime series. I'm not sure about that, but I still prefer the 20th Anniversary Prime's red.

Quoted for truth.
I forgot to mention that, my apologies.

The original 20th prime had battle damage paint marks, darker red paint scheme and dark blue reflective eyes, and is good quality and nice detailing.
the 20th DVD prime had a more orangy paint scheme and painted eyes (apparently more anime accurate) and the detailing such as the lights (top and bottom) etc. see below

DVD prime also lacks chrome and 20th prime has a black gun and dvd prime has a blue gun, as stated by someone already.
also his wrist communicators are different in each version. 20th op has bumblebee and starscream on his screens and DVD prime has grimlock and megatron on his screens.
there has also been alot of bad quality control issues on dvd prime such as his feet falling off the ankle joints. my friend experienced this on his DVD prime that we got him for his birthday and the same thing happened with the replacement we got him.
I have the battle damaged version myself, imported from the US in 2005 and to this day there has been nothing wrong with him. I also prefer the black gun as opposed to the blue gun and the darker red paint scheme. battle damage is ok... I suppose it makes it unique?

Uh... and all this time people have been saying that the QC on 20th Prime has been poor compared to DVD Prime. Have I been misled?

Nah, I have both 20th and DVD, and the right foot pops off both equally. Same with some MP-01 and 02's.
As long as you don't stand DVD next to any other MP/20th anni Prime, he looks fine.

Hate to be pedantic, but the original Transformers series, while animated, was not anime.

I have both and there are no noticeable differences quality wise. The differences are in the paint apps, and that's it.
DVD prime seems to be all over my walmarts for the $70 price tag, but if they last till after christmas (or even maybe black friday) they may be available for less.
In any event, having DVD prime beats not having MP Prime at all by a mile. IMHO he is the best transformer hands down

Sure it was. It was animated in Japan and Korea, in the anime style of the time.

I have both. No quality difference issues that I can see. I found them both to have better QC than the second run of MP-01's from Takara (can't comment on the first run).
I highly recommend the non-DVD 2004 version over the DVD version. IMO, the darker red paint, chrome parts, and glowing blue eyes add A LOT to the figure. You won't be unhappy with the DVD version, but you'll be much happier still with the non-DVD version. Some people are getting them off ebay for $100-120, scope it out and be patient and you'll find yourself one.
And let me also add that seibertron's gallery of the non-DVD version doesn't do the figure justice. The darker red paint looks so much better in person.

No matter which version you end up getting, don't forget to do the chromed long smokestack upgrade, and soon you'll be hunting for a trailer too. Good luck!

Sorry if this question has been answered; I don't recall. Where can I get this chromed up grade again? Tried looking on Ebay, no luck.

I got mine from this guy, his most recent long smokestack transaction was 11/08, so I would guess he ran out of current supply. Just keep watching his auction listings, I'm sure more will pop later soon.

I'm going to jump in here as well.
I have the DVD Prime and I have seen the Master Piece Version up close.
In terms of how well DVD Prime is put together - it seems just as sturdy as the other versions. No problem there. Has all the little assecories with it and the blue gun is not actually that bad when displayed with the figure.
Now, the big problem I have with the DVD version of Prime is in the paint. Not so much the colour but the application. The paint app on my DVD Prime is poor - uneven and blotchy in places, especially on around the top front corner of the cab - I saw a few of them that were really bad and put me off buying the figure. In the end I only got it because I won vouchers at work and used them to get him.
And even when I say the paint app on my Prime is poor - I have actually seen worse in stores.
If you can pick one up cheap then do so. If you are going to be spending Master Piece money on one I would say bite the bullet and buy the Japanese Masterpiece version - better paint app and no battle damage to worry about - by all accounts seems to be the best version of this Prime.
