Inspired (or lured, you pick) by a topic another member here posted regarding an intriguing question has gotten me to explore exactly how many transformer toys are there. Now we are talking about not just the mainline ones we say day in and day out. We are talking about repaints, diaclones, (knock offs?), etc.
So far my resources include the G1 checklist posters, the gallery here @ seibertron, tfu.info website.
I've been working on this for some time now and I know for a fact I'm not even close to being done. What is the tally so far? 1,412. It includes the unforeseen animated toys which I'm sure will be coming out. It does not yet include such lines as the G2, Japanese G1 (among several others like the Beast Wars), UK transformers (but I'm getting there), diaclones including the Converters and the Microman line. And the list goes on as I'm out of breath (sore fingers I mean).
Anyways, I would like members here to post links or pictures of any obscure transformer resource that I may use to complete this rather daunting task. And yes, I will probably be seeing a psychiatrist both during and afterwards. Thanks and any aid will be appreciated. I can keep updates posted as I make progress if there is enough interest.

This will help, atleast with the American side of Transformers. It's the check-list from TFW2005. I can't recall if it's completely updated with the Movie figures and 2007 stuff.

At last count I counted around 2000 figures before the movie.

Here's an update on my progress so far.
I've got the following toy lines completed as far as I can tell right now. I will leave mental notes (if any) here as well if anyone cares to respond.
20th Anniversary/ Masterpiece- should I include Op's trailer? And then again should I list every release of him since there were multiple?
Alternators
Animated- none are actually released unless I missed an announcement.
Armada
Beast Machines
Beast Wars- American only so far.
Binaltech/ Kiss Players- I probably could have listed these w/ the Alternators. But I'm not sure if I should list both American and Japanese versions, in which case I listed only Japanese releases here.
Classics
Cybertron
Diaclones- only 3 so far but I'm not focusing on this section yet.
Energon
Galaxy Force- again, similar to the Alternators/ Binaltech I listed only the Japanese toys that were not released in America. That doesn't mean they don't make their way to the states.
Generation 1- I actually managed to find European releases and get them included in this list. No Japanese yet but I'm getting there. So far this has been by far the longest list.
Generation 2- same as G1: got the European but not the Japanese.
Knock Offs- I've been working on the Brazil/Argentina knock offs mostly. Got some Korean but haven't been focusing on this a whole lot, just the ones I've gotten my hands on and whatever TSA has listed. This is where I would like help resources.
Machine Wars- this list wasn't as big as I thought, there has to be more out there.
Movie/ All Spark- I don't think I have all the repaints or not yet releases figures.
Robot Masters
Robots in Disguise
Titanium- only the 6" transformable ones. Lets take a vote on whether to include the statues or not...just a thought.
Universe- I doubt I have all of the spychangers included in this list but I know there were some taken from the G1 characters (I use to have some).
World's Smallest Transformers- includes the diaclones like the cone heads, ghosts, dinobots, etc. I did not put in the micro versions of the combiners yet. What do you think- there were umpteen versions of Prime's trailer, should they be included as separate pieces?

So far my total comes to 1,664 transformers and the list isn't done yet.
