Mine is pretty simple really. It must be G1(my definition of G1 is between 1984-1986).
If not, then I'm passing. If it is, then I'll buy it if:
1. I like the way the toy looks or
2. I like the character or
3. It is an iconic character.
Nostalgia plays a huge factor, as well as the size of the toy(the bigger the better).

Once, my major consideration is buying TFs is the die cast content. Any exceptions would be if its sturdy plastic.

First of all, it has to be a character that in some form I actually care about. That's why recycling character names from other shows helps; I see "Prowl" and "Smokescreen" and I remember them from G1, so I'll pick up their Cybertron versions.
Once I spot a character that matters to me, I generally have gone by how it looks in the package and the box art. I've gotten burned on that a couple if times, though...Cybertron Skywarp has a fantastic alt mode but the bot is kinda...meh. The lack of hands and the fact that the top of the plane is attached to the one arm as a shield is kinda poor, IMO.

Failing that, try my opinion.
It's delicious.

When it comes to choosing a TF to buy, it's a case of "WOW! An actual Transformer up here! It's a miracle!" that kind of thing since TF's are very rare up here.

I think the point of the thread was more of the procedure you use to create an opinion, though it's awful hard to do from the heights of Mount Better Than You.

Fascinating. Do you ever enjoy them frozen on a hot day?

There isn't a single day that I don't enjoy my own opinions.

But frozen. Frozen is what I wanted to know. Because, on a hot day, I quite enjoy a frozen soda. Your opinions only matter to me in the months of June through August!!

Um...ignoring that...
Before I but a figure, I just check the photogalleries here, and decide if it's worth it.
But, if I have no way of knowing what I'm looking for (i.e flea markets) I but whatever I see.

Sorry, Counterpunch, I'll have to pass on your opinions, Grape Soda makes me nauseous. I'll stick with my own, they're Cola flavored.

I might actually prefer your opinions to Counterpunch's.
But really, nothing beats Dr Pepper.

That IS the procedure! Besides, it's always sunny up here on Mount Better Than You. You should visit. We could throw rocks at newbs and enjoy frozen grape sodas with CP.

G1 reissues get a higher priority. Then well-done homages. But the figures have to be good. Other than the reissues, they have to have at least decent articulation, and be of some character I care about from at least one of the various TF fictions.
Or if it's a really good clearance deal. I paid about $6 for a Cybertron Menasor!

Reviews helped me a lot. I don't just walk into a store and buy whatever looks good. I actually consider getting which toys for ages before I make a special trip to buy it.
