So, I sat down and talked with a friend about this movie. I picked him because, while he’s not a geek, or a transfan, or even really interested in toys- he’s a smart guy, an excellent teacher, and a very talented artist. I thought his opinion on what’s going on here was very helpful in chilling me out, and setting this in perspective.

After filling him in on Transformers, the movie, my feelings on it, and other people’s feelings; I asked him “Is it okay for a movie to be dumb, if it’s based on dumb material?”

His response was: “Toys aren’t dumb, it’s how people play with them.”

I thought it was a really simple, and elegant analysis for this whole mess, and I’ll leave it at that for now.

...am I the only one that noticed despite his criticisms, Garth still said it'll probably be one of the better films of the season?

Honestly, at this point, I'm not sure that any amount of positive or negative reviews are going to convince people to alter their stances. Only the film itself can do that, at this point. Everyone's entitled to their opinions... though I do think it's a little juvenile to insult people whose opinions differ from yours. And, to be real honest, I've personally seen it a lot more from people who aren't happy with the movie.

On the subject of X-Men, here's a fair question: How much of that came from the script, and how much came from the collaboration on the film set? And come to think of it, X-Men got its fair share of criticism before people saw it, too. A lot of it involves Sir Ian McKellen as Magneto, who is now considered one of the best parts of the film series. In the case of Transformers, a lot of character will be created through performance, between ILM's creation and the voice actors.
