Film had lovely effects, a great cast and sweet airships. It did not live up to expectations, but was still very good overall I think. The book is far better, but the books allways are. :P

I had heard nothing about the big controvercy going on, and after doing some research into it, most of the people flipping out and trying to stop people going have not seen the film or read the books. They can truly make an informed opinion. :-?

Thinking for yourself is not actually a bad thing, I thought we all knew that in this day and age...

Also, how many Athiests do you think flipped out about Narnia? :P

the thing with narnia is that you have to know about the allegorical subtext in order to spot it, as a kid i read the books and watched the BBC series, did i spot a single christian metaphor? did i bollocks.

though i thought the aslan coming back was a bit deus ex machina.

i agree the Golden compass had a very rushed feel, as if they where trying to cram everthing from the book in without taking the time let the audience catch up.

i think since you have to watch knowing that it has an anti religeous undertone in order to be offended , the offense is somewhat self inflicted.

This is probably why I won't see it. Nor am I into this type of thing. Except for Goonies. That was kind of cool for its day.

It's not a new concept, there's been books and graphic novels about killing god or whatever before, only reason you don't see religious types getting all nutso for those is because none of them have a movie deal.
books were alright, nothing too great, nothing too crappy, probably would wait for the DVD to come out before I see it though

Weapon: Venom Blaster
Actually saw the movie yesterday. It was worth the matinee price.

Very rushed. Had a frankenstein stitched-together feel. As if the book were this wonderful quilt with subtle patterns, but they drew it all together into a simple doily.

They lost the point of the book being about the big question of "what are innocence and experience?" It seems like it will eventually get to free will vs. determinism, but without the discourse on what it means to be self-aware.

Lyra is supposed to be mischievous and devious, but not guiltily aware of her wrongdoing. The author actually makes a point about successful liars not being particularly creative people. In the movie she just seems hollow and simple.

I shudder to think how they'll handle the mental illness of the main male character's mother from The Subtle Knife. Or maybe they won't. Just like they avoided the death of the soul and the severing, and the seductive authority from The Golden Compass.

I saw it a few days ago. I liked it. My family and I were going to go see it on X-mas day, but my mom decided she didn't feel comfortable with it(Xtain and all). So we saw National Treasure 2.

Anyway, I liked the GC. It was a good movie, with interesting special effects and interesting story line.

I didn't see it as being against the church, unless your associate the Magisterium(Bad Guys) with the catholic church. Other than that it's not against Xtainanity.

It's about finding out the truth about the universe and the evil Magisterium will kill anyone who refuses to live the way they say everyone should live, meanwhile they are planning on taking this knowledge and forcibly making all of the other universes believing the same way they do. In that aspect, it's just like the Catholic church on their dealing with any new culture in the mid 1600's and so on.

I don't care if it is about a tongue in cheek reference to a religion. The movie is a good story about standing up for yourself and others that you love. Don't let any organization try to kill the ones you love and if you can destroy the evil organization(Magisterium) then more power to you.
