I'm sort of on both sides of this. I collect because I enjoy it, but it is naive not to have basic knowledge of them, including a rough monetary estimate.

Punch's last paragraph summed up my feelings exactly.

It probably has to do with the fact that if I had to consider selling these things for their accrued value, it would mean that my life was falling apart and I needed money.

If value is an important part your collecting style, that is fine. I do personally enjoy having some figures that are rare and in-demand, like G1 Overlord. But these toys are meant to be used, even if only taken out of the box and displayed.

You have a right to collect for which ever reason you want, we just don't want you to miss out on the actual toys.
