Anybody use any device to "fix" discs (DVD, PS1, CD, etc...)?
I've been very fortunate with all the DVDs, CDs, and Game Discs that I have. I have about 200 DVDs plus 40+ DVD sets, and all of them, except 2, have played without any problems, including the ones with light scratches. Even some heavily scratched ones have played fine.
The 2 DVDs that didn't play well I have been able to exchange at the retail store (because they were still in the 30 day exchange period) and the replacements played fine.
All of my 200+ Music CDs have worked perfectly with no skipping, freezing, etc... And I do have some heavily scratched up CDs. My Metallica St. Anger CD looks like it went through a tour of duty in Iraq, yet still plays with no problems.
The huge majority of my video game 200+ videogame discs have worked perfectly, except I had a few minor issues with 5 games (Suikoden II and Legacy Of Kain: Blood Omen had some choppy fmv, Jade Cocoon froze up on me once, True Crime: Streets Of L.A. froze up twice, and Star Ocean: Second Story froze up about half a dozen times).
Of course, I always try to handle my discs with care and not abuse them, but I figure somewhere along the line some of my discs will just stop working perfectly, due to normal wear and tear but that just hasn't been the case... yet So that's why I feel fortunate.
In the past 5 years or so, I've been in stores, some sales people have asked if I would like to buy a device to fix discs, but I was never interested because I have never needed one.
Until now...
Late last night I was watching the third disc of He-Man Season 1 Volume 1 when it started freezing up on me near the end of an episode and the picture got distorted.
Needless to say, I got quite frustated.
I didn't really have any options. The 30 day exchange period is over (I bought this over a year ago) is I can't exchange it for free.
This disc is part of a DVD boxset, so if I wanted a new one, I'd have to buy the entire set again for about $40 bucks.
Then I got to thinking about the devices that are supposed to "fix" discs, and thought maybe I could save my He-Man dvd. So I went to amazon.com and read the reviews on several these devices, and it looks like there's no clear-cut winner.
So I was wondering if any of you guys have any experience with a device like this and could recommend one?

I didn't read any of that but I would just like to express my exception to the picture in your signature. I bite my thumb at you, sir!

It's safe to assume that I'm just taking the piss.

I have a CD cleaner that I use to clear out my DVD player and it works well. Don't know if that will work for you but it did well for myself.

Why would the quintessential Brit use an insult popular in Renaissance Italy?

An insult also made popular by Shakespeare. He was rather famous across Europe, don't you know?

Listen, potatoes. Our island is bigger than yours and if you don't take that back this instant we're going to go all Rorkes Drift on your leprechaun-worshipping arses.

You forget your island includes the Welsh, who are useless, and the Scottish, who would probably side with us. Plus, at least we didn't have to surrender control of New Ireland!
Mainly cause we never controlled it in the first place.

Oh aye. But none of your terrible whiskey, I'll stick to your stout.
I'm gonna call you haggis, and I guess crumpets probably will too. All we need now is a welshman...

*tries to overlook the derailing posts, wants to smack some sense into them...*
The topic at hand: Buying a disc repair unit is hit or miss, mainly miss from what I've witnessed first hand. I bought a kit a few years back and it actually ruined the disc beyond repair.
Your best bet is to go to a video store (a big chain like Hollywood Video) because a lot of them now have machines that will repair discs. They'll even repair them for you, for a small fee. (I think it's around $2.00 a disc.)
What's really going on is, they're actually grinding off and resurfacing the top layer of plastic (which is scanned by the laser/eye of the player) and it removes all of the surface scratches to the point that the laser can actually read the data layer. However, if the scratches are too deep, or the disc is physically flawed (during construction) then no amount of repairs will fix it, nor will a replacement.
I don't remember the name of the film, or what it was exactly, but there was a DVD that came out recently that was flawed in almost all of the sets and they had to do a recall. I believe it was part of a box set if I recall correctly.
Either way, good luck.

I have a Disc Doctor, and it's been a god send. Some of my games were unplayable, now they work like brand new. Highly recommend.

"Consider the knowledge dropped."
From ToplessRobot.com:• "Watching Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is marginally better than sh***ing your pants, but it takes a lot longer." Very well put.

Really? They actually work?? I hadn't heard any good reviews. Perhaps I'll check into them then...
