A math task
ok here'S the scoop
you got 7 children
each child has 7 bags
in each bag you got 7 cats
and each cat has 7 kittens

It depends, did they order from dominoes or vitos?

7 x 7= 49 kittens per bag + 7 adult cats per bag = 56 felines per bag
56 x 4 legs per cat = 224 legs per bag
224 x 7 = 1568 feline legs per child
1568 + 2 = 1570 legs (feline and child included)
1570 x 7(kids)=10990 legs total (unless you are to count yourself)
Hope that helps

I think the line is supposed to be "How many _legs_ have you got?" Edge. The answer is 2. ;0)
It's like the old Cornish riddle;
"As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with 7 wives,
Each wife has 7 sacks,
Each sack has 7 cats,
Each cat has 7 kittens,
kittens, cats, sacks, wives,
How many were going to St Ives?"

Or, and easier way to express it is:
(7x2)+(7x7x7x4)+(7x7x7x7x4)=10990
(Kids legs)+(Cats legs)+(Kittens legs)=Total legs

Adding a second level of logicality to this, the phrase "you have" could also mean that the person involved is to also be included in this. Assuming that "you" doesn't have any legs missing, add an additional two to the answer, in this case 10990 + 2 = 10992

I hope this wasn't a homework problem, because doing it on a calculator is way less work than posting it, and that's not counting the long wait for an answer.

where are the kittens and the kids? Maybe they're all at grandmama's house? It is only stated that there are 7 cats (with 4 legs each) in 7 different bags x 7 kids.
The "has" in: (Each kid has 7 bags) could just state ownership, so the kids don't have to be present. Therefore ... I'm not counting the legs of the kids.
The focus is how many legs are in the bags ... by the wording of the riddle. The kids could be somewhere else, so could the kittens.
Also, we don't know how many legs that the kittens or children have. The only information we can go on is what we know already.
by my logic there are only 1,372 legs. It's all we can know for sure, everything else in inconclusive.

The question is somewhat 'flawed'. It reads:
making a distinction between cats and kittens and then says:
By the question's own logic, one could argue either:
i) that it should read "each cat and each kitten has 4 legs",
or
ii) that the question does not tell us how many legs each kitten has (as it only says how many legs each cat has), therefore making it impossible to work out how many kitten legs there are.
EDIT: As AlienQuikSilver says, we don't know how many legs the children or the kittens have.

The question doesn't specify that the legs have to be in the bags. It just says, "how many legs are there (each cat has 4 legs)". Given the lack of distinction, one could argue that it refers to either the amount of legs inside the bags, the amount of legs outside of the bags, the total number of legs inside and outside the bags or something else entirely. Not to mention the problem of the children's legs.
I think I've missed something here.

Eh, Edgecrusher just worded it "their" way ... and not the way that it was originally written.
Unless Edgecrusher invented the riddle? In that case, it's obviously going to need some polishing if everybody is to have a fair shot at it.
But yes, the answer is 10,990 if one is completely ignorant to the fact that there are a lack of crucially important details. My mind can't get past that. It doesn't make me superior or anything, because sometimes I miss out on things that ideally require less thought.
With that said, I envy those who got from point A to point Z without getting hung up on everything that is/isn't there.

7 kids*2legs = 14 legs
7kids*7bags*7cats*4legs = 1372 legs
7kids*7bags*7cats*7kittens*4legs= 9604 legs
alltogether 10990 legs
7kids*7bags*7cats*4legs = 1372 legs
