g1 sideswipe

Postby piranacon » Tue Dec 27, 2005 3:58 pm

after seing both the cool alternators this week i wanted to have a go myself and with a bit of time to wait till the epoxy set on the dinobots i made this guy

i realy wanna do the arms but it hasnt clicked yet how to do them best, i think hound and inferno will be next since i have junkers of those

the hips move round and the legs have the movement of a shockini, also still transforms

Nice job - the Shockini parts are exactly the right size! :D
Be interesting to see how you pull off the arms, though... :?

this didnt take much if any skill just a bit of imagination, i basicaly just cut sideswipes legs off and lined up the shockini legs, a bit of epoxy goes a long way lol

i transformed him again today and the legs are a little bit too long by about half a mm :( might reset those, it all matched up yesterday

even put his old hands back on, the arms can turn arround so ive added a lot of movement on those,
hope you like it

Is it the pose/pic or me? The legs seem to be shorter in the new pic.

just you lol nah i think its cos he had his knee's bent, i cant get the proper light to take a decent picture of anything latly.
but if anything he is actualy a little taller then the origional because of the way the hips transform

here is the car mode, you can see where the legs set a little too long, yesterday when i took the picture i thort the epoxy had set but it was a little lose it wont be much to fix,

for the shoulders, how about putting a standard universal joint? the wheels won't sag because the joint will only allow them to turn while the arms are rotated parellel to the car body.
well, probably easier to put 2/3rds of a universal joint from the wheel to the car body, and then the 2nd swivel on the bicep past the wheel.
universal joint is just a swivel on each end of a bend. at least that's the impression I have.
those shockini swivel joints look really loose. all the pictures you have show them crooked.

if any fothe joints look lose or crooked its because they are ball joints and they all add to the movement, the legs can move apart but the feet can stay flat on the floor to an extent

thanks for the idea ont he sholders but i think they are good as they are, there realy isnt much room on the telescopic bars for a ball joint , i coudl add oen btu i think it woudl be mroe trouble then its worth,

the only thing id add is maybe a ball joint on the head too and maybe to his feet, then look for some spare parts, he's missing the spoiler and weapons,

why are there ball joints in the middle of his thigh and bicep? those body parts aren't supposed to bend. I can understand it's probably cheaper to use those for swivel joints, but why are they so loose that the limb segment can actually BEND?

not a balljoint. a balljoint would let the wheels rub against the wheel-well. a universal joint is a combination of 3 seperate joints that give complete articulation. a swivel, a bend, and another swivel. if you put a single bending joint that legs him raise his arms out to the side, the wheels won't bend into or away from the top of the wheel well in vehicle mode. then you put a swivel in so he can raise his arms in front of him (I think the telescoping joint already lets him do that) then you just add the third joint of the universal joint below the wheel to allow for bicep swivel. I'd suggest having the elbow remain attached to the car door, otherwise the car door will get in the way of him bending his forearm outwards. a little harder to line it up in vehicle mode, but you could maybe add something to clip it on.

the only thing id add is maybe a ball joint on the head too and maybe to his feet, then look for some spare parts, he's missing the spoiler and weapons,

I hope he can stand on those balljoints. I hate balljoints in ankles. and really anywhere that holds up the toy. like stupid BM Divebomb or Skyfall or whatever that flying dino is.

dude its good as it is. ball joints rock, he can already move in ways an alternator cant, the universal joint would probablllly kill the whole arm movement making it too lose to even lift up, the only thing he cant do now is move his arms forwards which is fine

thanks bro,
the joints are on the same scale as a few Tf toy lines like the g1 cars and robot masters, there is a guy on the shockertoys forum that wants to try them out on a jazz, and i think i might try hound next if i do another one,
the only problem is maybe when the legs extend but could be worked arround

You see, this is what Has/Tak should've done all along. Not simply reissueing the olg G-1 cars, but modding them to give them (extra) poseability.

Great work, and by all means: do all the G1 cars !!!

Well, they wouldnt be reissues then

However, they could have done something similar to this for the RobotMasters... specially the seekers

Great work Adi. Also Adi is using Gen2s for these parts and they tend to be a bit lose as they are an older model. Our new Gen3s have tighter joints and are a bit stronger using a different plastic and factory. But all in all I love all the kitbashing!

Interesting, I've been thinking about ordering some myself for kitbashing.
