The final fate of the original Megatron/Galvatron? *spoilers...naturally*

Postby voxbox » Thu Jul 05, 2007 1:43 am

Can anyone please fill me in on what finally became of the classic Megatron/ Galvatron from the original animated continuity?

I know in the American version, he was last seen alive and well with Scorponok (to my knowledge).. were there any comics or Botcon/collector's club stories that shared his fate following "The Rebirth"? Beast Wars never goes into what happened to the original Megatron.

I'd also like to know what became of his Japanese counterpart in Headmasters, Victory, and beyond. Please include any canon manga stories as well.

Thanks SO much for the info!

I can only go by headmasters which directly followed the cartoon and in it Galvatron in another big battle for earth was plunged into the frozen sea and was frozen.

I know in the generation 2 comics he was found and came back as megatron.

Im not much help , im sorry, but at least its something. I never liked Beast wars so I dont even know if it had anything to do with G-1 ..did it?

One thing is for sure, Megatron and Prime never truely die.. they are so iconic that they cant be kept dead forever (a lot like superman, which personally i hope he dies for good)

I was always disappointed with that "final battle" scene, since it was just Galvatron getting his but handed to him by the Headmasters. I would have much preferred a climactic fight with Optimus Prime, but the Japanese series had already killed him off again by that point.

After that fight, Galvatron was assumed dead for a number of years, but returned in Battlestars (which was a continuation of the animated continuity, even though it was only released in print in manga and Japanese magazines). In that series, Galvatron was resurrected as Super Megatron, then upgraded to Ultra Megatron, and finally merged with the Dark Nova entity to become Star Giant, which was then defeated by the current Japanese version of Optimus Prime, Star Convoy.

The comics generally took place in the present, rather than jumping ahead to 2005 like the cartoon did, so when Galvatron appeared, he was from the future. The Megatron that was featured in the G2 comics was still the present day version of Megatron, and had therefore not yet become Galvatron to begin with.

As for Galvatron's ultimate fate in the comics, well, first of all, in the G1 "Time Wars" storyline, all of his time travel was messing up reality, and after a huge fight where Galvatron kicked some serious butt, a temporal rift tore him to pieces, killing him. Then later, a Galvatron from another possible future came back in time too, continuing the character in a way. I believe he was said to have eventually died in Simon Furman's "Alignment" storyline, which is set centuries after G2, but I've never gotten around to reading that all the way through, and whether or not that should even be considered part of the official continuity is debatable.

I hope that was some help.

I found that alignment story on a site a few years back. It's a good read (I would expect no less from Furman). Galvatron II (as he is refered to in Alignment) is not actually in it. He is just mentioned having a massive fight against Prime that ended his reign and leaving Prime comatose.

In that story, Soundwave, Ravage, RamJet and a guy I never heard of ressurrects Megs to help the crumbling cons (they are in the same situation as in FFoD) but they are interrupted by the Leige Maximo forces. Megs sacrifices himself to put an end to the Leige Maximo.

If you want to read what Galvatron gets up to after Rebirth, read Conquest Cybertron. Seriously. It's a good read. [/shameless plug]

He's an ancient, evil entity that appeared on the final page of the final issue of the old G2 comic. He described his origin and connection to the TF's thus:

When the first named Prime was created, so was the Liege Maximo. And from the Liege Maximo came the Decepticons and all their subsequent generations.

Had the G2 comic continued past issue #12, the Liege Maximo probably would have been the main villain for the next major story arc. Unfortunately, the series was canceled at the conclusion of the Jhiaxus/Swarm storyline.

However, in 2002 (you may want to double check that date), Simon Furman published a prose story called "Alignment," which was available exclusively at a TF convention in the UK (I think it was Transforce). Alignment dealt with Liege Maximo, and essentially tied up the loose end of his G2 appearance.

For years, copies of Alignment were almost impossible to find, because the convention was adamant that no one sell them to non-attendees, or else they might not be able to get cool exclusives like that in the future. Eventually, however, in 2005 if I remember correctly, Alignment was released online for free as a .pdf file (and subsequently, the prices on hard copies from Transforce have dropped significantly).

The cartoon and comics continuity are seperate. The comics are a bit rich to get into on all the different Galvatron's and being seperate characters from the one we know as Megatron (too much to go into here). The G2 comics take place after the events of the original Marvel series, and of course, written by Furman.

Originally, Beast Wars was going to be a continuation of G2 - in which Optimus Prime would become Primal and Megatron is still Megatron. But fan backlash over these sorts of changes adversely affected how the writers of the show decided to handle that situation. They decided to distance themselves from the original TF and made the show a bit ambiguous, most noticeably making Primal and Megatron seperate from the G1/G2 counterparts. But over time, fan response to the show made it a hit (especially thanks to the internet), and towards the end of the first season began to cement BW as a continuation of a sorts of the original cartoon (with bits of comic trivia thrown in as in-jokes and references) set 400 years later (but in Earth's past - time travel is an awful headache).

References include, a dream sequence of Starscream on Cybertron, Waspinator believing he was Shrapnel after a bonk on the head, Starscream's Ghost/Spark possessing Waspinator, and two appearances of Unicron (once as a flashback, and the second as a vision created by the Vok to invoke a sense of authority when they were speaking to Primal).

In Alignment, he was undergoing a process he had planned for many mellenia to turn himself into a god. The process would destroy the entire universe and he didn't want any distractions, which is why he attacked the cons and the bots on Cybertron. Needless to say, there were a lot of casualties.

Magnus also proved himself a capable leader as well. Guess he was better at overall command in the comics than he was in the toon.

Just to complicate things further on the comic front the current arc of the Collectors Club comics using the Classics designs follows on from Marvel G1 continuity but ignores Marvel G2 continuity, seperating off into a seperate timeline. This means that there's now another version of G1 Megs running around. Being Hasbro endorsed this should probably be seen as fairly canonical but it's worth bearing in mind that the main purpose of the Timelines material is to showcase toys that otherwise don't get shown in other versions of TF fiction, particularly the Club/Botcon exclusives but also covering characters like Cy Unicron and Downshift that didn't get any screen time in the respective cartoon.
