What year VW was G1 Bumblebee supposed to be?
I'm looking to buy one to restore it and make it as close to our favorite scout as I can.

Sadly, we don't know. And we'll probably never know because G1 Bumblebee's proportions are off, being akin to a Super-Deformed Penny Racer. The reason is that he's supposed to be one: in the original Microman line, all toys were supposedly life-size in scale, 1:1. Megatron, Soundwave, Blaster and Perceptor also came from that line.
Masterpiece Bumblebee has realistic proportions however, so the year will be easier to guess. Just make sure it's from before 1982

The resident Rewind... well, half of one

Well seeing that most g1 cars are new or relatively new, I'd get one from '87-'82

I know in the 1st live action movie the Bug parked next to Bee in Bobby Bolivia's lot in the wink to the character's previous incarnation had a '71 sticker on it. But that probably doesn't mean anything...

Does anyone think that a modern 2014 Beetle/Bumblebee/Goldbug Edition might be made by Volkswagen now that the business communication lines are open between Takara and VW? I saw an upcoming dune version of the Beetle in gold(2015 model?) that looked like it would be a really cool real-world Goldbug.

Re: What year VW was G1 Bumblebee supposed to be?
I would say go with a '76 but no later than a '77. Even though it was never revealed what his actual year was, the cartoon representation "typically" had a shorter, chibi-like front end. (depends on whether he was drawn on a Monday or a Friday. lol)
The '78's and later started to develop a slightly longer front and a bit of a flat spot just past the windshield. Kind of ruins the whole effect when you have a plateau just past the windshield and the toy version definitely didn't have that look. So if you have a G1 'Bee figure (and I'm guessing you do and probably more than one) I'd use that as a guide also and not just stills from the show. More often than not the show stayed reasonably close to the figure design. Good luck in your endeavor!
