Mega Man 9
My evening is booked. I downloaded MM9 shortly before leaving for work this afternoon and was able to log about 7 mins before running out the door. Everything seems great so far. The difficulty, new tunes and graphics are right on the mark.
I was able to make my way up to the female Robot (mermaid) Master, but wasn't able to beat her... with the time I had. No sweat though. The challenge wasn't too overwhelming, like some journalists are making it out to be, but it is tough. For $10, this is a sweet deal.
Oh yeah, and I don't want to hear complaints about the downloadable extras. If you don't want to pay for them, don't buy.

Eventually you can download Protoman as a bonus character for 200 Wii points. Not sure if more downloads were announced though

This game is incredibly fun. I'll admit I'm high on nostalgia at the moment, but it takes a lot for a game to make you smile every time you die a cheap death.

I really have to disagree.
The game is, at least to me, not so much fun.
Former Mega Man games had cheap deaths that just 'happened'. Now these cheap deaths are by design.
There are more areas in the game where getting hit means you take a stunned fall into a pit. Level lay out is meant to ensure this.
I'm making progress in the game. However, unlike say, MM3 where each level is tricky and fun, we instead have trial and error gameplay.
At several places I felt like I was playing 'I wanna be the guy'.
Think you're a gamer? Look up and give 'I wanna be the guy' a try.
Back on topic. I wanted to put this game on and just enjoy the throwback. Instead I get a kick to the balls.

Re: Mega Man 9
In fairness CP, I don't think MM9 stages are any harder than some of the worst offenders in #2 (Flash Man) or #3 (Magnet Man). Granted, a handful of jumping sections are a bit rough and could have been tweaked to be less dick, but I was able to beat a few stages and bosses without continuing on my first time through.
Have you gotten to Wily Stage 1 yet? There's a puzzle after the mid-boss that definitely belongs in IWBTGG. Ouch.

The wily stage is already kicking my ass. I saw those 3 beams and realized, "Yeah, I'm not getting up there". Took forever and I ended up picking the wrong ladder.

re: Quickman (You meant Qman right?) and Magnetman stages
I think the difference this time around is that there aren't 'effort based' rewards which allow you to skip that stuff.
Quickman's stage was easily overcome with Flash Freeze. Magnetman's stage was easily overcome with Rush Coil.
MM2 was bullshit on the Wiley run. No doubt.
I think MM3 was the best of the old school bunch. All of the bosses and challenges were always challenging enough to push you, but not challenging enough to make you put the controller down.

No, I meant Flashman. You know, the hidden boss in MM2 that Capcom accidentally left in and is only viewable using a three-line Game Genie code. You know, the Flashman minigame that lets you flash unsuspecting mettools? No?
OK, I meant Quickman. You got me. My only gripe with Mega Man 3 is the inclusion of 2's bosses. After beating the first eight robot masters recently and the four stages reopened, I said "aw f---, these guys again?" It made the experience feel padded.

I couldn't even beat Splash Woman. The levels are aggravating to say the least. I've also noticed the hit detection on the spiked ceilings is way off as well. Used to be if you were a pixel a way, you'd be okay. Now you get within a freaking foot of them, you die.
I played for about an hour last night.... Then went back and beat the **** out of MMX and had a lot more fun.

The game gets better as you play. Don't be afraid to just E-Tank your way out of everything.
There are also some difficult jumps or obstacles that can be overcome with smart Rush placement.
The bolt rides in Tornadoman's stage can be ignored by continual jumping. Staying on the far side of the belt and jumping at the first opportunity everytime will easily get you through.
All things considered though, people are viewing this game with some serious beer-nostalgia goggles.

Can't argue with a lot of the criticism. this game is evil in it's cheapness. I also have a problem with platform areas that REQUIRE the use of rush and boss weapons. Neat idea but usually screw up and end up running out of the weapon/item I need and prefer to die rather than use my M-tank just to fill up the rush coil.
the 2nd wily boss was unique but not much fun. When the weak point is also the part firing at you, that pretty much means you're putting yourself in the line of fire, hurting yourself more than the enemy.
Even without the nostalgia factor, I can't criticize the boss levels design . They're painful, but very doable even from the start.
EDIT: and now having encountered metools disguised as 1-ups, my forgiveness level is dropping quickly.

Mega Man X is not Mega Man 10.
The X in Mega Man X stands for Mega Man's name in the series, which is X.
Regardless, only the Game Boy Mega Man series used roman numerals. By that logic, Mega Man X would be the 10th iteration of the Game Boy franchise... which it's not.

Well, the NES Mega Man games used Arabic numerals (ie 1,2,3,4, etc.) while Game Boy used Roman numerals (I, II, II, IV, etc.) to distinguish the two series.
In any case, my point is Mega Man X is not Mega Man 10.

Yes, and it had extras like a sound test and secret mid-bosses (Woodsman and Cutman, I think) that the PSOne didn't.
