What molds have you done a "180" on?

Postby Iron Prime » Thu Oct 04, 2007 12:39 pm

Weapon: Energo-Sword
When the movie toys first came out I didn't like Starscream or Ratchet's molds. However after closely examining Rescue Ratchet I'm really starting to warm up to that mold and am thinking of getting it.....

This got me wondering: how often do people do a 180 degree turn on their opinion of a mold? Have any of you thought you loved a mold, but later hated it? Or, like me, have you changed your mind after the fact about a mold you didn't like?

I'm not a fan of the Movie "look" in general, but some stuff is growing on me. I might pick up a Prime at some point, and Rescue Ratchet looks alright. The head has to go, though.

Energon

When I saw the original pictures, I swore I wouldn't buy them. I hated the combined modes, clear weapons, and most of all, Prime.

Then I buckled, like a belt, when I found them in WalMart.

I was just so happy to find new toys I bought em all.

It tasted like victory.

I'm potentially facing the same issue with Animated. :?

Though I think I can pick the figures I truely like and leave the rest behind. We'll see.

Maybe I'll just buy them all, yet again.

Because I'm a whore.

There was a point in the them idle of Cybertron's fun i nthe UK where the only ones I didnt have that were currently available were the ones I didnt like the look of (mainly Landmine and Backstop).

Somehow though, when I got home, I couldnt stop playing with those two. I think backstop reminds me of the simple fun that good G1 toys are. And Landmine, I dunno why, but I just really like playing with that toy.

As for the movie... well I started off really ha\ting a lot of the designs, but being truful enough to admit I'd probably buy them. When they first came out, I was innitally hapily surprised. Sadly the novelty has well and turly worn off now, and quite frankly Im fed up with the ugly ass, not particularly fun to transform or pose movie toys.

Roll on TF animated and Classics 2, Im looking forward to both of those.

When Cybertron was going full steam, I couldnt for the life of me find a Dirt Boss. I wanted that bloody monster truck really badly.

When I finally got him though, and the head didnt sit flush with the body by design, and the cannons never lined up completely parallel with each other, and the Cyberkey had nowhere to store itself, I was underwhelmed.

Hes still a monster truck though, so its all good.

Molds? There's not any molds I've changed my mind on after my first inpressions of them. Colors? Yeah, that's another story.

I first saw Energon Unicron as a toon-soon innacurate repaint of a toy already out. But I got him and love his dark, evil new colors.

MP Starscream had me scratching my head with his colors. But now I've gotten used to them and really like them.

And G1 Megs actually changed my mind after I got him. His robot mode may look like ass, but holding the fully assembled gun .... yeah, that's a toy I'm glad I own. MWA HAH HAH HAH HAH!!

When I got Energon Prime, I understood what people said about his waistline and all that, but he grew on me. A few months or so ago, I started not to really care for it again, mostly because of the power-rangery feel of his useless-as-anything-but-limbs helper robots. I turned it around again though, as I recently finally got Wing Sabre to combine hi with (which lookds fantastic) and also, having picked up the mini version of Energon Prime, I'm now free to mess with the big one's head and make a new character out of him.

I wasn't a big fan of the designs when I first saw them before the movie was released...

Once the movie was released and I saw the TFs in all their CG glory, I proceeded to stalk every Walmart, Target, and TRU from late July til now to find each movie character... and I even joined seibertron.com.

at first, i wasn't really feeling classic rodimus

but then i saw the custom someone did from blackout to blades, and found out the cool looking head was rodimus'. So i watched a few reviews and looked at the pictures, and decided i changed my mind, and purhcased him.

I didn't like the Leader Optimus mold, and REALLY disliked the Voyager Optimus mold (with the big backpack-looking thing).

But then I came across Xeltecon's repaints, and.. well, now I really want a Leader Optimus, and the Voyager one doesn't look half bad either.

His repaints:

I thought I liked the Voyager Prime mold, until I saw him in person today at Walmart... looked so inferior compared to Leader Prime...

so I guess I did a 180 from liking it to disliking it.

Did not care much for the Cybertron Hot Shot figure when I first got him, but with the addition of Excellion I now love the mold.

Energon Sharkticon and Ironhide were figures I got purely because they were so very cheap, but now I really love Sharkticon, and Ironhide I have grown to like, he has not been packed away in a box yet, even though when I bought him, I figured that when my space issues reared their ugly heads he'd be the first to go...

2 figures I eagerly anticipated, and thought I would love: Movie Ironhide, and Hybrid Style Convoy. But I hate them. They're fiddly, fragile. They look good in pictures, but not a lot of fun to be had there.

Other big turn arounds: Movie Ratchet, and Movie Scorponok. Those are 2 quality figures that a) I thought I'd hate, and b) fully intended to skip, but c) ultimately caved in and bought during the great TF drought largely due to the fact they were among the only TF merchandise still to be found on the shelves.

Ratchet is such a robust and great looking figure. Even the puke green has grown on me. Transformation is simple but fun. Scorponok, a shabby bot mode and stupidly simple transformation initially overshadow the fact that scorpion mode is pretty cool, but the discovery of the 'Japanese monster mode' totally made it worthwhile.

I've done 180's by seeing TF's at a store that is butt-ugly. That is, picking up the package, looking at it, puting it back, and then turning around and walking away.

I've also done 180's on Transformers that I didn't like. I didn't like anything after Generation 1 (that includes Beast Wars) up until now. I like BW now. I still don't like Armada, or most of Energon. However, I didn't like Cybertron for a long time until I picked up one of them and liked it! I can't remember which one it was though. Excellion and Unicron are a couple examples. Now I really like much of Cybertron toys.

In the Classics line, I didn't like Grimlock and Astrotrain all that much, but now, I am glad I have them.

In Alternators, I didn't care for Sunstreaker that much, but I bought one anyway just because he was an updated yellow hot rod. I'm glad I did, he's grown on me even though his bot mode is kind of lame.

Movie line, it would be Starscream-both versions. Man, he looked bad in the online pics, but he's great in RL!!! The other would be Jazz. I hated his stupid arms, but now, I like the little guy (though I am still not a fan of the arms) and I even picked up a G1 colored one just like SS. :)

And '74 BB. He's great. Didn't like him at first and I passed on him three times. But he's cool. He does not have big feet. LONGARM, has BIG FEET. ;)

Happy happy.

Movie Megatron. Thought it was terrible, until I saw the excellent repaint here on the forums. I'm now strongly considering buying one and repainting it myself.

It's where you stand him up on his big claw arms and use his tail pincer for a head. It's a lot cooler than it sounds.

One of those fan discoveries not mentioned in the instructions or on the packaging. Looks a bit like some monster Godzilla might have fought back in the seventies.

See it here ... about 4 minutes in.

Oh, wait. I thought of a mold I used to like but don't quite anymore.

Bootleg Kabaya Galvatron!

The pics of him make him look cool, but he's so damn fllimsy. And they mismolded his foot so opne foot doesn't stay in place. Coule that to the fact that I suck at repainting and I like him less than I used to.

Although he still makes a decent gun for Unicron, when I feel the need for him to actually have guns. Him and WSTF Megs make Unicron the double shooting planet eater of the west.

I got Movie Jazz. he was my first Movie figure and i thought he was the most movie accurate deluxe. Then I got Concept BB> Now I think Movie Jazz is too fat. Maybe he's on robot steroids coz his head is too small.
