And other than HP5, I doubt any other film released this year will surpass it.
Awesomesauce; Use it, you know you want to.

And you know that Transformers is going to get another small surge when the IMAX version hits... or is that considered a separate release?

Ack! Look at the international totals. Pirates blew away Transformers internationally. Ah well ... it at least gets the domestic win over Pirates.

Domestic or international, it bears noting that Transformers is still the highest-grossing NON-SEQUEL movie of the year. That in itself is quite an admirable feat

How about this... I haven't seen either movie yet (GASP)... I was in China for a month (when TF) came up.. I was too lazy to go to the theatres to see Spiderman before I left... and then too lazy to see TF after returning..
Only a movie like The Dark Knight (next year) will get me into the Theatres:)

WOW!! The metal machines beat out the waving wands of Hogwarts!! That is AMAZING and I'm so happy to see that Transformers has landed making such a big mark in our culture even after so many years. And even stronger than Pirates? I can't wait to see how big TF2 is gonna do. It can only get better I hope!

well, about 20% of the people in this country still believe that Saddam had something to do with 9/11 and that there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, so the total doesn't surpise me at all.
Or impress me.

I don't know about other countries but it seems that PotC has had much more publicity over here than Transformers. Maybe that's why?

I remember the Pirates fans saying how their movie would beat Spidey...and it didn't.
Then the Harry Potter fans said their movie would beat Transformers....and it didn't.
Good year for me and my movies.

Pirates, Spidey, Shrek and HP5 all got a fair whack more publicity than Transformers did. National TV Stations got behind the three "blah 3" as well.

I don't think Pirates 3 had anywhere near the amount of publicity that TF got. You couldn't go a commercial break without seeing some kind of TF commercial during the lead-up. With Pirates, I saw so few commercials I wasn't even sure when it came out. Then again, I mainly watch cable, not national TV stations.

Sorry, I'll clear this up.
In Australia, one of the National Broadcast channels (7) jumped on the Spiderman and Pirates (and Knocked Up) bandwagon, another National Broadcaster (9) jumped on Shrek. Transformers ads were on, but they did not get anywhere near as much airtime as the other summer blockbusters.
