Just curious, why Sam instead of Buster Witwicky..
(-cont) from the comics, or the name "Spike" from the cartoon, just been wondering why they chose Sam, especially since it's a very common name. It's not really a big deal, just a minor gripe and was just wondering if there was a particular reason. Or, if maybe they just chose "Sam" instead because maybe it sounds better or something.

I'm reminded of Arrested Development.

Hmm..good point, to make him seem like an average joe, guess that does make sense, didn't really think of it like that.

Because it is a proper name. Like a person would have.
You don't burst out laughing when you see it and it does not sound stupid.
Spike and Buster are silly and okay respectively, as nicknames but as nicknames not as anything else.
Seriously stupid name for a character in the film.
Sparkplug is just moronic.
I hate Spike fron the G1 series. The character more than the name.
Spike the XMen character from the newest cartoon series I like.
And Sam Whitwhicky is a original character not some clone of previous idiots.

Spike and Buster sound very stupid.
Sparkplug is just moronic.
Hopefully they are nicknames or they are really bad names.

I'm offended...i named an electrical device that sits in my engine's cylinder head sparkplug!

You answered your own question.
Here let me single it out for you.....

They wanted the audience to relate with the character and what better way then to give him a very common name.

Isn't Buster Spike's brother in the comics?

Yes. In the comic's Buster plays the role that Spike plays in the cartoon (becoming friends with the Bumblebee etc). Spike does eventually turn up in the comic and is much older than Buster and goes on to Binary Bond with Fortress Maximus. I think Buster was referenced in the Dreamwave G1 comics as well. The dad was called Sparkplug in the comics and the cartoon. They were all Witwicky's though.
Watch the first of my youtube series, Friends Transform.

I've never heard of Buster or Spike being used as human names, but for dogs, yea, I'd use them as dog names. Besides, there has to be some differences between the movies and the cartoon series.
