Were the Designs absolutely nescessary?

I loved the designs and am glad they went with them...
I would have killed myself if they had a G1-esque Frenzy doing stuff Movie Frenzy did.
It wouldn't have worked at all

It doesn't matter what it was originally going to be called.
The only thing that matters is what he got called in the movie, and that is Frenzy.

As a former movie designs skeptic, I say the movie designs worked, and worked fabulously. It would have not worked with G1/Cartooney designs. Period.
The designs rocked, btw. I was scared when they were on scream. They looked intimidating. If you didn't like the designs after watching the film, then you're out the club.

That would not have worked.
It was also done by an amateur. Don't you think Profesionals like ILM would have made it look more real? They have the computers and the training. This guys has limited resources compared to them. ILM has far better materials to render the model with.
Basically what I'm asking is, was it really necessary to have pipes hanging and exposing other parts of the character?
actually, yes.
they tried to make the parts match the scale, and realistically, the outer shell of a Camaro is only going to cover so much of a 15-foot robot....
In a cartoon, you can get away with megatron going from 30 feet tall into a 2-foot gun, or optimus' trailer disappearing into thin air. You can have major unexplaned transformation holes and get away with it.
In a movie, people are going to notice that stuff.

Hot_Rod wrote:So what you're saying is that THIS style put in the hands of pro's like ILM would in no way have worked and had a snowballs chance in hell to work just as good as the designs that were actually used? You're saying there is no possibility at all that they could have made THAT kind of design (on their high performance proffesional grade computers) look good and work with the story that was written??
P.S. That animation sequence was modeled directly from the Jazz commercial bumper out of the original show. Buy obviously, that is a whole new Transformer.
It's not the amount of detail, and special effects you toss at the design. It's the design in itself. Yes, it theoretically could have been done, but would it have the same effect as the awesome designs we actually were blessed with? No. The answer is no.
Those designs just don't fit with the real world. Great in 2-D media/ Comics, Anime. Awesome. But a direct translation from those mediums, to a theatrical film IRL, with realistic tones would be fails'ville.
I am ecstatic, we didn't get G1 exact models in the film. Oh gawd, that would have been terrible. I even actually bitched about it a couple years ago. Damn was I off my rocker.

Also, I wanna add that they looked great. I'm really in love with the designs.

they could have done it plenty of other ways... they just couldn't have done much better.
flames on prime are my only gripe, and by saying that I mean my gripe is flame decals on optimus prime. I'm not going to spend more than twenty seconds getting upset over something so silly.
They wanted prime to have a mouth to make him more appealing as a good guy...
they COULD have left it that way, too. But instead they added a battle faceplate that imitated prime's original look, just to appease the fans. That's more than a fair compromise.
Believe it or not, this movie was not made JUST for the older generation. They have a younger audience to cater to as well.

Hot_Rod wrote:OK, now let me ask you this... Was it absolutely nescessary to give Starscream and Megatron mouth pinchers, Ratchet a Beaklike feature on his face, and Optimus Prime flames? And did it HAVE to be done that Optimus Prime had to take off his face plate?
See personally, I think it looked really odd in that clip when you see Primes mouth move. It's really stiff and the motion just looks weird. And because of that, I question if the logic behind it, as I thought it turned out cartoony.... just as cartoony as any traditional aesthetic would have (I mean come on, mouth pinchers... a beak??)
But in your honest opinion, do you think they could NOT have done it any other way than what was done with the above mentioned design features?
No, they didn't have to have that. They didn't "have" to have any of the features they did. But my point is, what they did with them, worked. They looked menacing. They looked like they were from an alien planet, and they looked good. What more could you ask for?

so basically, your whole complaint is that they didn't make the models more like the G1 cartoon...
This is a movie, not a cartoon. The models were done for interaction with live humans and surroundings, not cheesy animated backgrounds.
It was not ever going to happen, and most G1 fans are more than happy with how things turned out.
Accept it and move on.

The whole face plate thing really needs to be laid to rest.
It's a pointless and stupid thing to bitch about.
I thought this topic was going to be about the over all designs, like going with the more complex, realistic designs as opposed to walking bricks.
But no, it got turned into "let's bitch about a stupid face plate"
He conveyed emotion without that face plate, I doubt it would have had the same effect with the face plate on.
**edit**
I don't know what movie you were watching but I watched Transformers and FELT like I was watching Transformers.

no, they don't have a CARTOON feel to them.
as a G1 fan, I'm sorry you went in thinking you were going to see a cartoon instead of a live action movie, but perhaps you might want to consider that since transformers has never been DONE in live action before, the robots just might look a TAD different in real life environments...
