Actually, I've warmed to G1 Pretenders in the last couple of months. I used to hate them A LOT: only Action Masters were a worse idea than Pretenders IMHO. However, since getting some of the more popular Pretenders (Thunderwing, Bludgeon), the concept has really caught my imagination, and I'm playing catch up with characters like Longtooth, Carnivac, Skullgrin, Octopunch and Landmine. Oh yeah, and I recently bought my very first Action Master: Mainframe...
I'm so meta, even this acronym...

I hear ya! I find myself doing the same lately. Going through "New TF Withdrawl" so picking up ones I normally wouldn't. Axor (liking him now too)was my first actually in this run of frivolous TF spending....which I am quite enjoying actually.

It did possibly cost me a lot of $$$ in the future though. I bought Masterpiece Grimlock recently, which was my first MP figure and now I more or less have t have the other MP figures to go with him. They are so expensive now that I may have to hold off on all other collecting for a while just to get them all as cheap as possible, before they go up even more!

I actually found a fairly good Gen Megatron, so I got it. The paint apps on a few of the Generations figures are completely atrocious. But I finally saw a great copy of Megatron, so I grabbed. I am happy I did.

Pretenders rock. I'm actively collecting them MIB/MISB, the Masterforce Destron pretenders and Masterforce MIB Lander are absolute highlights of my collection.

I sorta warmed up to PCC Steelshot. Hated him first but then I discovered he's FUN.

Okay first things first just to comment on some previous TF's mentioned Sidearm SS kicks ass all around. Axor kicks ass all around as well but his only flaw is his weapon is made with that flimsy rubber crap but his look and awesome head mold makes him waaaaay better than Lockdown...IMHO! These 2 particular TF's I cursed and thought they were both eaqually crappy and vowed never to get them. Well first I got the Challenge at Cybertron and found that Galvatron is really cooler than I perseaved. Then adding this custom Matrix I got on ebay in his open hand that holds it perfect makes it even sweeter! I just choose to keep him in robot mode which is best.

And the other is Tankor/Octane. He IMHO is perfect as a basic TF and not a triple changer. His plane mode which I feel does not suite him for scale reasons, makes him go from tanker truck to robot and back. I got the Henkei version at a great deal and I like to pop off the wings in robot mode and don't care for his rake like weapon. He is just perfect with his 2 chrome pistols blazing. Definitely the 2 I warmed up to never thinking I would...'nuff said! :CON:

I passed on him. I just got him on eBay for cheap and I like him. He displays nicely. Next to Astrotrain.

G1 Ratbat. I got him recently, and always thought he was a cool looking figure from photos - but actually having him in hand is something else. He's perfectly proportioned and his wings are wonderfully articulated.

Honorable mention - G1 Rumble. Its amazing.

Noone recently falls into this category but a few years ago I bought the custom head set for G1 Ratchet and Ironhide because I had an old Ratchet. I wouldn't go near Ironhide before but with the head, he's one of my favourite G1 toys.

Also, the original Classics Starscream was horribly painted. Being a Seeker nut however, and seeing a new Seeker at the time, Acid Storm, I took a chance. I've since bought the cartoon accurate Starscream repaint which looks infinitely better to the first Starscream.

Oh to the earlier poster whose just discovering Pretenders and Actionmasters, just to let you know, Pretenders Jazz and Grimlock have terrible robot modes but all is not lost as their cool looking Actionmaster counterparts fit nicely into their respective shells. Naturally, Jazz has one of the coolest shells in the range. Oh and Cloudburst was one of my first TF's and has remained one of my favourite G1 toys over the years.

I wasn't going to get Generations Soundwave cuz I wasn't sure I liked him as a car and I'm perfectly happy with the g1 version. But I was looking at him in the store and decided why not; he's my favorite character and the "car" is kind of awesome. I already have the animated version and I plan on picking up the Unicron one sometime soon. Soundwave is superior. :CON:

i got HFTD Firetrap recently as part of a TFCC scout set (one of the ones with Windcharger) and i was surprised with how good he looks. with his color scheme, alt mode and head sculpt, i decided he may make a nicer Classics Brawn than the Legends class version

It took a while, but I warmed up to PE's Ultimate Form for City Commander. I hesitated because I don't really buy any of those guys as their G1 counterparts, especially Garboyl. But the combined mode looked so great that I got it and do not regret it. Except not-Sundor's head was put on upside down, so I gotta deal with Robot Kingdom.

I still don't think of them as their G1 selves, but they're good in their own right.

You should definitely pick up Leader Starscream if you don't already have a version of that mold--he's one of the best movie toys. Also, $25 is a STEAL.

Sidearm Sideswipe is also really cool and much less kibbly than the original mold. And I don't really mind the red on him (although I know others do).

Warming to movieverse

So have you warmed to any as of late .

Highbrow. My initial take was that his arms were too goofy and his alt mode too far from looking airworthy. But he also has a lot of good points, including minimal kibble in his alt mode, excellent leg/foot articulation, a cool slide-down mask, and a general distinctiveness. The more I looked at decent pictures of him, the more I liked him. So I ended up going for TakaraTomy's Autobot Alliance version of him on account of the darker blue.

In hand, he's become a favorite. Leg/foot posability is outstanding (even though he does suffer from the too-common short thighs). And the arms can be positioned such that he looks a lot better than he does in the packaging.

And then… well… Movieverse.

As a fan who grew up with G1, it's taken the better part of the movie franchise's lifetime for its aesthetic to grow on me. So, after having dabbled with a few figures on the "border" of the movieverse continuity as well as its aesthetic (Highbrow, for instance; Mindwipe is another example), I'm in the process of putting together a collection of significant movie characters. Rules I'm trying to observe:
  • Nothing below leader class that's way out of scale. (And by that, I mean that in general a Leader class figure is the biggest that we're going to get. Leader Starscream still isn't big enough to be in scale with a Deluxe car; but he'll have to do.)
  • No twins. Those characters are loathsome and their toys aren't that great, either.
  • No Constructicons that don't turn into individual robots. (Devastator, you are a disappointment.)
  • No ROTF motorcycle sisters. Just awful character designs there. (I have snagged an Arcee from the 2007 movie line, though. I like this figure enough that I'll break the scale rule for it.)
I'm on the fence about getting the individual non-combining Constructicons. Not combining is a significant strike against them; as is the fact that they are just about all way undersized with respect to an Autobot lineup consisting of:
  • Deluxe Bumblebee, Jazz, and Sideswipe
  • Voyager Ratchet and Ironhide
  • Leader Optimus Prime
But my Decepticon ranks for this assemblage look a bit thin; and the Long Haul design in particular is pretty good. It's quite a shame that Long Haul didn't get a Leader class figure.
