Considering as how the TRU Rodimus doesn't come with a trailer but does come with a Targetmaster, I'd say it's supposed to be MP Hot Rod. The general coloration and painted detail on the legs (plus the sticker options for the arms) make it G1 toy accurate. When Hasbro and Takara both make the same figure, one usually goes for show or comic accuracy while the other goes for G1 toy accuracy. They got screen,

Sadly the TRU MP Rodimus was even accurate to any media nor toy versions of 1986 Hotrod. 1986 Hotrod's toy/media had a pearl white face+hands. the TRU MP Rodimus had this weird galvanized dull grey inner face+hands.

Putting the hotrod decals on the lower legs of the Hasbro TRU MP Rodimus made ZERO sense. because this is unique to hotrod not rodimus prime. Hasbro clearly labeled the TRU Exclusive Rodimus prime & even reveals the rodimus prime robot mode instructions in the instruction booklet & box art. having the hotrod lower legs decals is a real buzz kill & just ruins the extended robot mode for rodimus prime. It's hard to visualize the extended robot mode is Rodimus Prime when their is clearly hotrod lower legs decals visible.

Their was no valid reason why we got such a ugly weird flame decal pattern on the TRU MP Rodimus toy. last I checked the 1986 hotrod flame decal didn't have a ugly design pattern.

Hasbro didn't use the Takara colors pattern for TRU MP Rodimus BECAUSE IT COST TOO MUCH. Hasbro opted for their unique colors patternt BECAUSE IT COST LESS MONEY.

The reason they called it Rodimus and not Hot Rod is they no longer have the rights to it. Period. Also, they couldn't remove the Rodimus older face anymore then they could not have gotten rid of the hip extending or the back crest changing positions. It's supposed to be an update of the G1 Targetmaster toy. The face is the same gray plastic as the shoulder pieces, rims, hands, and under the chromed parts. I just love the fact that it not not only comes with a brand new Targetmaster but also the brand new opening Matrix in addition to the tiny one that goes it his chest. The only thing that I don't understand about it is why it came with a con sticker option. And losing a simple black outline around a slightly different flame deco on the hood/chest does not mean an inferior paint job and is not a make or break cost prohibition. It just means they went with a different design.

I don't agree with you. I like recolors, they sometimes surpass the original (BLACK CONVOY AHOY!) and keep the Hasbromachine going.

I agree wholeheartedly, especially on the single greatest thing to ever come out of a Japanese TF cartoon.

What I'm having trouble reconciling about this whole issue is Tidalwavex is both desiring a return to the A/E/C way of doing toylines and also banging on repaints. Given that the second year figures during any of the three Unicron Trilogy series' was mostly just unnecessary repaints of the prior years figures, I just think it's funny.

You are not making sense with this at all. The name Hot Rod can no longer be used. That has been made clear multiple times. Hasbro has not been able to secure the Trademark for Hot Rod. If they could have used it, the TRU reissue would have been Hot Rod instead of Rodimus Major.

Also, TRU MP Rodimus was not a bad recolor. I actually like the way it looks a lot more than the Takara version. more of a throw back to the Hot Rod toy color which makes sense seeing how they opted to not release the trailer over here.

I think what deathy is arguing is if it were supposed to be Hot Rod they woulda called it just Rodimus instead of Rodimus Prime... Whatev, it still has what HasTak considers to be two bot modes thanks to the two faces and the ability to make his legs extend a 1/4 of a centimeter in height. So he technically has a Rodimus Prime mode as well as his Hot Rod deco...hence the likely decision to call him MP Rodimus Prime.

I'll never understand why so much butthurt comes out of what name Hasbro puts on the package...who knows exactly why they put whatever on the package, but more importantly, who gives a s**t? Or maybe better put, why give a s**t? Call it whatever the hell makes your nipples stand up all perky... Except in the case of Que...calling that piece of **** Wheeljack should get you punched in the face.

I'm not too happy that the TRU Rodimus was based on the toy colours. I do like the chest flame decal, and don't mind the black outline missing, but there are a lot of the little details lost as well, that does make it seem like a cheaper paint job. I'm not bothered about the trailer, or the Targetmaster, or the name, but I'd have liked to see a toy of the Hot Rod character from the animated TF:TM available in stores in the west that looks as nice as the one available in the east. (or just one that was a bit cheaper to import).

As for repaints? I generally like them, or at least the idea of them. The only ones that do bug me a little are when something is a perfect design for a particular character, but is released in a couple of versions that bare no resemblance to it, or when a repaint is only very vaguely different from the original.

What are you talking about with pearl white faces? I'm looking at them and the faces are painted a light grey. Too dark to be white and too light to be a true grey.

The MP Rodimus is not meant to be an exact representation of what you want. It's merely a good looking throwback to history. Take it or leave it.

I agree wholeheartedly. The Cybertron Red Alert makes a beautiful Classics Trailbreaker (I know because I did it) but we got Crackcase out of it. It makes an alright Crankcase but who the hell wanted Crankcase? Especially over a Season 1 Ark Autobot? But I can't get too mad because at the same time they gave us Fracture, and Crasher makes a great Neo G1/Classics edition over any of the other GoBots. I'm hoping for a Cy-Kill from Wreck-Gar but I'm not holding my breath (even though an Oil Slick repaint is a gimme on that one.) But while Hasbro seems to miss the obvious every now and again, they do awesome ones that we don't see coming. Again Tracks & Wheeljack, Straxus & Skullgrin, C Sideways & U2.0 Ratbat, who would've seen these coming?

Repaints are a give and take. We keep taking what they keep giving!
