It's not Like G1 was much better, everyone and anyone knew about the Autobots and Decepticons!

Depends on which G1 you mean.

Marvel G1 - Relatively unknown at first, gradually becoming more known until they're considered a public menace (even the Autobots)
Sunbow G1 - Completely publicly known
Dreamwave G1 - Once known, then thought to be dead, then known once again after their return
Devil's Due G.I. Joe/G1 - Not quite well known, but enough that the government knows
IDW G1 - Unknown at first, then BOOM! "All Hail Megatron" changed that altogether

Being a T.V. show I was referring to the G1 cartoon. Didn't even cross my mind to reference G1 comics.
