Why the animated series doesn't appeal to older collectors
Re: Why the animated series doesn't appeal to older collectors
Exactly!!!!!!!!!
The show works fine for what it is. he toys are great in their apparent simplicity and anime accuracy.
However, seen this all before. Actually, seen Prime crash to Earth a few times too many now. I would have loved this show if their was some type of continuity so that I felt the story was actually going somewhere.
The first episode didn' even make sense. They show Prime watching "Historical film" of the war depicted in G1. Yet when they show up on Earth, noone knows what TFs are. Huh?
I'm tired of the same characters being recycled over and over and over and over. People talk about this show being new and refreshing. It is not. Besides the anime style, there is nothing new here. Wake up. It is recycled and is not all that it could be. I still watch it and almost enjoy it. It is still disapointing. I was hoping for more.
And this is not G1 bias. I loved G1. I just want to see the franshise continue with the foundations that have been laid. Not retell the original stories over and over and over.
Leige is right. No other franshicse has been as exploited as the TF franchise. Maybe the TF fandom in general just demands too little. Maybe it is too small for Hasbro to really care.
Either way, I enjoyed the movie and this show to an extent, but it took a serious effort on my part to get over my deep intital disapointment.
Sop making excuses for Hasbro. Those whoknow me know that I have always supported the company. However, that does not mean that they are beyond criticism. Let your OCD about TFs go for a moment and recognise people taking advantage of you.

Heck, I'm 13 and I wasn't alive during the G1 days, but I still think the G1 toys and shows are the best, and I really do think there is a big leap in design, because think about it, the 2007 movie brought back some older fans, due to the more realistic look, but the animated series may have the BW writer, but the art style in my opinion is too kiddish. Armada was a good idea, and had a resemblence of the older ones a bit, but animated is just too much like all the other cartoons on cartoon network. It's just too plain.

This is one of the dumbest things I've read in a while! Hasbro is getting their asses handed to them by Power Rangers and Disney!?!
Jeez, I can't recall EVER seeing a shortage of Zords, Buzz LightYear and Princess crap.
Everytime I go around a shop I see more kids looking at the power rangers junk than transformers. Almost without exception. Just yesterday, I was in a shop where they've now shifted the transformers to a small area in the back and replaced that whole prominent section where transformers used to be with Power Rangers.

No other franchise treats their fanbase with such disrespect, Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, Macross, DragonBall, Evangelion, Naruto, StarGate, and on and on and on always make it a point of nodding to and respecting both continum, and both the old and new fanbase.
Ever follow Batman, or Godzilla? Reboots aren't such a bad thing when they completely screw up a franchise. Even the new Hulk film is a reboot.

Every time I go to Wal-mart I see the spot were TFs used to be left bare pegs, when they aren’t bare, there are kids and adults looking and buying.

you guys wanna just stop flaming and acting like douches?
Teh shows meant for kids, so you don't need to watch it.
Classics 2 are coming out. Pay attention to that. Ignore animated. there.
want moar G1?
read comics. illiterate? too bad.
Collect Alternators and Classics.
Want a new show?
the show ended in the future of 2006, Its 2008. it wouldn't make sense.
either we continue another show(who wants more of Cybertron's non-annoying humans and good dub?)
or stop collecting and get a life.
PS. Counterpunch IS a douche huh?
always saw that on peoples signatures. wondered why.

Re: Why the animated series doesn't appeal to older collectors
Has there ever been a PERFECT transformers show?
I love G1. but the show isn't something that'd win an emmy.
crap animation. can be a bit cheesy. etc. voices are awesome.
but G1 still sorta sucks.
And every single show after it "ruined TFs 4evah" they were just different.
But at least
they had good animation.
it made sense.
there wasn't a Wheelie.
battle scenes didn't need 80s music.
Starscream wasn't a wimp.
Dinosaur and animals rule!
The toys look like the show!
Bumblebee could fight.
Megatron didnt have to run away every time.
etc.
every show is different and G1 isn't the best in some people's opinions. some love Beast Wars. Some love animated.
each is very different from the other.
okay, you can go flame me now...

Re: Why the animated series doesn't appeal to older collectors
Except for that last part of your statment(I got no problem with the guy)
You are correct, directly continuing G1 would be a mistake, and the crappy Cybertron dubs sholuld never be done again.
However, if you are going to make a new show, even if it's intended for children(as most are) there is no reason why it can't be good.
Failure to air grevences and let these types of things happen will pretty much tell the producers that whatever is fine because we must not care.
I complain because I think they need to know that The Angry Archer is something they should be doing alot better than. Observe how he just does not belong...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zA4NYadPUZo
And no, this isn't a G1 thing, it's a quality thing.

That shop that downsized their TF section and moved it to the back? They've had the same crummy transformers tech, Cyberstompin' and CyberSlammin' junk since July or August. It just isn't moving.

Hey I'm with you there. I thought the Archer was like a sub-Adam West batman villain.
TF Animated is far from the best kids show on tv, but it's definitely a step up from any transformers show in the recent past.

Re: Why the animated series doesn't appeal to older collectors
Look writing wise I'll give it to ya, this show has potential.
Design wise though, it needs to be severly retooled, because it's a turn off to the older fan, and an insult to the younger. And yes, I'm an uncle with alot of nieces and nephews, I survayed them and their friends.
They like the robots (mostly), but hate the people.
Still the writing and aproach to this show does have alot of potential.
As for the toys, do go look at Spider-Man and Star Wars, you'll find the same laptop, potatoe head, gimmicky crap that everything gets when a movie is made for it...
However, look at the figures, Deluxe, Voyager, and Leader, they can't keep them on the shelf, and that's why their pegs are filled with other product.
Want prof, do this.
Go into your local Target, Walmart, TRU or whatever, crease the corner of a TF package, and do the same when to a StarWars, GIJoe, Power Ranger or whatever.
Don't damage it, just mark it so you can pick it out in a week.
Go back is said week and I bet you'll find every mark you left except the one on the TF.
Movies create shelf warmers for everything, but the consistant scale figures, never last long, and it's always been this way.
So just to sumize with my biggest grip about this show. If it's pretty much always been this way, that must mean that alot more than mom, grandma, and other people are buying this stuff for 5yr old Johnny.
Now what urks me in this franchise is that everytime it restarts(which is constantly), the production staff of the movie show or whatever starts off by saying "F--- what the long term fans would want, here's some new dribble"
To this I say, "Thank You Franchise for respecting my thousands of dollars in constant support"
They could have just as easy tried a new style with out being sure to mention that. The movie did it too, and it's getting old.

What kind of crummy shop is this anyway? My local stores (Wal-mart, target, ect, ect) can barely keep anything on the shelves besides real gears, you must not remember Ultimate Bumblebee being the most desirable toy back at Christmas or back in July us finding out that Hasbro sold three million Transformers toys between June and early July.

That's actually a pretty good idea for a test.
I'll give you that the deluxes and the voyagers have been selling like hotcakes, but the trouble is certain shops have been failing to discriminate between the merchandise that's in heavy demand, and the natural-born shelfwarmers.

Absolutely I remember that. But amongst a certain demographic, Power Rangers has been consistently popular for quite a while. I don't get it, but it's what I see.

Exactly my thoughts. And I'm 32. My favorite series : G1, Movie and Animated. Toy lines : Movie, Animated, Alternators, Masterpiece and G1. My Animated Prime looks right at home with the other Primes on the shelf.

I'm 33 (34 this year) and grew up with G1 .........blah,........... blah.......blah, blah................................................blah
I like the new animated toys, will buy most likely all of them, unless it just looks too awful. I say if you dont like dont buy. I didnt buy all the movie toys because some of them I just dont like the way they look, same with G1's.. if I dont like the way it looks I wont buy it... just because its G1 doesnt mean I have to buy it. Everyone here from reading these forums collects the way they like, wether its a certain series, character, color, style, so on and on. All we do here is offer our opnions to each other so others can make a decision on what we think. I can not like someone elses opnion but thats whats great about this world. I see your point and I have mine sometimes they agree sometimes not, but In the end we all collect and enjoy TF's
oh and forgot to add I like the cartoon also

Haha right? If there was one quality from G1 to definately hold onto, that was it.

But yeah, Liege is right. Those who are accusing us of flaming, take a step back and see what we are saying. The issue is not that this is not G1 or whether or not it is a kids show. Regardless of those facts, the show is not that good for reasons pointed out already.
My main gripe really is the animation of the human characters and the "restart" of the story once again.

Re: Why the animated series doesn't appeal to older collectors
ignoring older collectors right now I reckon animated is going to work with the kids.
Why?
well if the kids have watched a few eps of the cartoon and then have access to the toys they will immediately start saying 'my bad' with bulkhead as they smash him into dinobots and 'me grimlock' with, well you know who. That just isnt going to happen with the movie toys is it, well not to such a degree. prowls going to be hanging from trees, BB's going to be thrown down the stair rail, SS will be laughing mercilessly.
kids might simulate movie BB's urination thing but theres close to ZERO personality in the movie characters.
im not sure the movie toys 'spark', they are just so dull, the animation toys have lots of 'spark'.
generally, i grew up with micronauts in the 70's (ie the western name for takara microman, the line from which megatron, soundwave, casettes etc originated) which puts me close to oldest end of TF fandom (actually i wonder just how old can fandom get?), ive always kept my eye on TF since G1 and for me animated are the most interesting, coherent and likable set of toys since G1. Unfortunately a lot of anihaters seem to dislike them because they are 'not what they are used to' rather than because of any intrinsic qualities of the toys. Nostaligia is not always a good thing.

kids might simulate movie BB's urination thing but theres close to ZERO personality in the movie characters.
im not sure the movie toys 'spark', they are just so dull, the animation toys have lots of 'spark'.
generally, i grew up with micronauts in the 70's (ie the western name for takara microman, the line from which megatron, soundwave, casettes etc originated) which puts me close to oldest end of TF fandom (actually i wonder just how old can fandom get?), ive always kept my eye on TF since G1 and for me animated are the most interesting, coherent and likable set of toys since G1. Unfortunately a lot of anihaters seem to dislike them because they are 'not what they are used to' rather than because of any intrinsic qualities of the toys. Nostaligia is not always a good thing.

Re: Why the animated series doesn't appeal to older collectors
Being an adult, i would still prefer better animation than what is offered in TF Animated.
Especially so that we are now in the 21st century.
