in comparison to the domestic (as in US) box office, spidey 3 made 336mill, shrek 3 made 320mill and pirates 3 made 307mill, all established franchises. Transformers is still having 1mill+ a day, so it will easily make at least 300mill in US, and easily 300+ in rest of the world. So let's take a look at the other 3 worldwide...

Spidey 3 553mill worldwide, for 889mill total
Shrek 3 406mill worldwide for 727mill total
Pirates 3 644mill worldwide for 951mill total

not too far from transformers' 600mill worldwide (so far) and all 3 cost alot more than transformers to make too. And the sequel will make more as all sequels do.

I find it funny how many (?) people were saying that transformers was going to flop. And let's not forget the upcoming dvd of course (as everyone that knows about the business these days, dvd sales are as (or more) important than the actual box office)

And what's even more amazing is that the Transformers had mollusks to flex in the first place!!!

(mussel = clam-like mollusk)
(muscle = organ used to flex and create force)

With Japan the last major market to open this week.

So Paramount is looking at over $600 million. Quadrupling its budget. Not many movies can make that claim.

Japan opened this weekend and it only did $5.3 million, but supposedly there was bad weather, so we will see how it does next weekend.

Don't suppose the amount of money gained would have any positive effect on peter Cullen's pay check?
If it does I'll go see it another 10 times for that reason alone.

Well, can't blame the Japanese. Look at that wonderfully insulting trailer SpielBay made a while back. "If we speak your language, it's okay to make your robots pee!" "See, we're just like you."

I have a feeling the Japanese looked at this, looked back at Godzilla 98, and just threw their hands up in the air.

I wonder if this will affect the Voltron movie? Can American filmmakers actually make Voltron dumber than it originally was? If they did it for Transformers...

I can't wait for the "re-imagined" robots for that one.

"You see, we thought the idea of robot cats that combine into a bigger robots was silly. So we made them into tanks and GM cars. But as a sweet homage, one of the cars coughs up a hairball."
I'm not angry... I just hate most things.

Takara made the original merchandise but Hasbro made them the 'Transformers' we know today. Just felt the need to point that out. :D

I'm not surprised by the low numbers. They opened it on Aug. 4 after all and, regardless of the weather, the number 4 is bad luck in Japan. Heck, Chinese have freakin' heart attacks thinking of stuff like that.

Other than that, I see no good reason why the Japanese would not like the movie. Although I've heard weirder...

It does not get better than this. The DVD release is going to be awesome. Won't last long on store shelves.

Looking at the same topic at TFW2005, I can say that not only are their mods ridiculously biased by allowing some of the inflammatory "**** you, haters" comments yet not the opposing equivalents, Transfans are the only bunch of geeks that need to be consistantly reminded that just because something is popular makes money, doesn't mean it's good.

A lot of "Haters" commented that this would flop, and get torn into. They were just overly emotional, and I don't blame them. I knew this would succeed, but not for the right reasons.

Come on, it's a big ass action film, the first one with proper giant robots, with the name of one of the biggest properties in the world attached to it, not to mention Spielberg's. How could it not break a ton of records?

Transformers open #1

Postby riogrande100 » Tue Aug 07, 2007 9:17 am

TOKYO -- Opening on Saturday (Aug 4) on 600 screens, the Michael Bay-helmed "Transformers" jumped straight to the top of the Japanese weekend B.O. with a two-day total of Y631.3 million ($5.35 million.) That spelled more than "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ," which took in $4.04 million over the weekend.

The "Transformers" figure is 16% better than the $4.6 million opening weekend for "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" ( Japan cume: $57.5 million) and 6% better than the $5.07 million of "Mission Impossible III" (Japan cume $43.4 million), both of which bowed in the same summer period.

"Transformers" also compares favorably with Bay's previous smash "Armageddon," which opened in Japan with $5.87 million and went on to make $114 million in 1998. With the Japanese exhibition circuit considerably smaller than today, "Armageddon" had a lesser number of prints.

Looking at the strong early numbers, and the higher than expected female auds, distributor United International Pictures is predicting a $59 million final tally for "Transformers."

--------------------

If it meets the predicted amount in Japan we could be looking at $700 million. Dreamworks must be loving life for making this movie, while others ditched it.

The combination of humour and action and giant robots is propelling this movie into the straosphere. Can't wait for the sequel, and a worldwide release.

There wasn't much in the way of humor, that much I'd agree to. But the Japanese love this sort of stuff, never mind the big near-realistic robots.

agreed... if the first of what could possibly be a long running series is making this much so far I will be interested in seeing if it can do better in the next few installments. Lets all hope the general downward slide of sequels doesnt affect our bots.
