Not nitpicking, but in general, guns can be mounted like that, as long as the rate of fire and propeller spin are synchronized. The bullets literally pass through between the propeller blades. It's pretty slick.
Did they have that technology in WWII ??? Even if they did, I would still be scared to pull the trigger. One loose bolt or miscalibration and your going for a nose dive
