I'm guessing their Protoforms are designed to take heat, but their normal forms aren't. Probably whatever material they use in their Protoform can't be made to look like the variety of different textures necessary for an effective disguise on earth.
But this is filling in for the script writer's mistake, so screw that.
Were the Designs absolutely nescessary?
