There will be change, the end of one era and the beginning of a new era.

Weird first post and enquiry for a TF board

Nothing will happen on the 21st. On the 22nd, there'll be huge parties and several so-called "experts" will be very embarrassed.

I have a question: Why the Mayan calender? Is there something that makes their prediction more credible than any other prediction?

I know the calender flips over, but you don't see people terrified that their car is going to explode as soon as the odometer flips over.

But why are we using the Mayan Calendar? What makes it any more credible than any other calendar.

I looked some stuff up; there's actually no record of the Mayans claiming the world would end. However, there's supposed to be celebration for making it to the end of a cycle. Likewise, there IS record of the Mayans believing that whatever is supposed to happen on 12/21/2012, has happened before, and that things got better for it.

In the Mayan belief they say that 2012 marks the end of an era and will also be the birth of a new one, they don't know what will happen, but they don't belief that the world will be destroyed also the plot of the upcoming Emerich movie is very very unlikely. What they do know about the next era is that it's going to be the 5th cycle and while the current cycle is dominated by male energy the 5th cycle will be dominated equally by male and female energy.
Te funny thing is, the sun is actually changing and has scientists pretty much baffled and worried. The face of the sun is spotless at the moment, the sun is just smooth for an unusual time.
Fact is the Mayans have been watching the sun for far longer than we have and they might have figured something out, seeing that they worshipped the sun and their calender follows the sun and is dependent on it, the sun might do something in a weird regular basis which we'll find out in 3 years.
What might happen is that the sun will change it's surface drastically and set of very powerful plasma energy and f**k up all of our electricity related stuff.

Ancient prophecies are pieces of crap. As a environmentalist, I'm not going to prepare for something that will probably never ever happen. Yeah, maybe i'm ignorant, maybe i'm a fool, but I've got more important goals and ideas to help the world out right now, not for something that will probably never happen.

Big Change in 2012? A start a new era? What the hell does that mean, that could mean anything for goodness sake. Apocalypse? People and all creatures alike are experiencing an apocalypse. Africa for starters. Climate Change? There's countless apocalyptic things that more than 75% of the world's populations are experiencing currently, and what are some people doing? Sticking their faces in computers, looking at symbols and patterns, biting on their nails in fear of a prophecy from some ancient civilization that died due to ignorance to their environment. Yeah, Mayans? They died. Great civilization? Yeah, that's a matter of an opinion. They're just a civilization. They failed because they were led by corrupt leaders and did not acknowledge the environment. Sounds familiar doesn't it?

If you're preparing for an apocalypse... I don't even want to talk with you.

No it wouldn't kill us, it would only destroy our computers and infrastructure that relies on electricity.
The only thing we would notice (if it should happen) is that the lights go crazy and your computer and any other sensitive electric gadget stops working.
But all that might happen is just a constellation of our solar-system's planets.

And the thing with one era ends and a new begins is pretty easy and broad, it could mean something huge like that the US dies and China becomes the new world power or something tiny and seemingly unimportant like that traditional newspapers are replaced with electronic ones like that electronic book Amazon has.

And the reason for why the people get their panties wet about this is as the Mayans did foretell things that happened like their own downfall at around the same time as they did disappear, they also foretold things like grate heat periods that set them back a few hundred years and even ones that happened in our time.

They just watched and observed the sun for so long that they created their calender based on certain patterns of the sun's action or habits after all the sun was their god and they kept a good eye on it as they noticed that their lives depended on it.
And I think the actual era that comes to and end and gives way for a new era is just that this calender cycle comes to an end and the new cycle starts, so end of the current calender cycle and beginning of the new calender cycle.
But I do think something will happen on that day, it could mean that Mexico just gets even hotter than it currently is, which would explain the whole end of one era birth of a new era. Cos if it gets so hot and the suns keeps beating down and there is little to no rain you can't expect much crop to grow, which back in the days of the Maya would mean that many people would die and cause severe damages to their culture and civilization that would mean in the worst cases that they would have to start over new.

Stupid people will have to pick a new stupid date for some imaginary catastrophe to happen.

They thought the Sun was a sentient being, I doubt they would have reasoned that sunspots were magnetic activity that causes cold spots on the solar surface. And even if they did, they had no electrical equipment, how would they know what was supposed to happen?

Likewise, what would they have studied the sun with? Telescopes didn't come around for centuries, and the only way to actually stare at the sun for that long is to have what amounts to a giant pair of sunglasses.

Basically a giant EMT from the sun. I wouldn't be surprised if on 12/21/2012 the new era was that the whole world needs to get their own calendar now. The Mayans seems pretty interesting, I'm gonna go read up on some of their own procecies and such.

I forsee disasters of biblical proportions. Real wrath of God type stuff. Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes. The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
