Whatcha' Playing Cary?

Postby no-one » Thu Aug 06, 2015 6:59 pm

I like them video games 'case ya didn't know. I've been a gamer since the NES got it's vile dirty hooks in me in the way back. But I'm not here to talk about the last 25+ years of gaming only what I'm playing now.

I'd like to say I'm a pretty diverse gamer, but that probably isn't true by today's standards. So to skip some time I will just state what I don't play. Sports games and online games. Yeah online games are pretty broad, but I just don't play em. No hate, they just don't appeal to me. There are a few exceptions of games that have online lite, if you will. I've made a bit of a fuss of one of those games in my collection thread. I won't repeat myself; I'll just link you to that post.

Over the years and getting all "grown up" and due to lack of time I've had to narrow down what consoles I own. I am primarily a Playstation player, so I tend to focus on PS exclusives. I dabble in 3DS and would love spend some time with a WiiU (couch co-op is my multiplayer of choice).

So, what am I playing? Well I'm glad you asked.

Diablo 3 has been my obsession since it was released on the PS4. I've got a couple lvl 70s, a couple lvl 50s and a ton of low lvl guys and gals in waiting. I'm no expert by any means; hell I wouldn't even say I'm an intermediate player. I just enjoy the grind and the game play.

If you follow one of those links above it leads to Journey. I played through that again on the PS4 and wouldn't mind talking about that some more.

I'm also a PS+ subscriber, so I play a lot of games from that. I like the service because it exposes me to games/genres that I normally would have skipped.

Because of PS+, I am currently and slowly working my way through Styk: Master of Shadows on the PS4.

It's an OK stealth type game. I'm enjoying the dark fantasy aesthetics, but I've been playing this game since MGS1. I'm enjoying it for what it is and it has a few unique features.

I've got like the worst backlog on the PS3. I will probably never catch up and should accept that. I just recently picked up FoC on clearance and I'm playing through it again. One of these days, in my fantasy, I will force myself to finish playing Mass Effect 3. I'm not really playing anything on the PS3, so it really doesn't count.

My PS Vita has a growing back log as well. Mostly thanks to PS+. I am currently trying to get into Freedom Wars.

If you don't know, it's similar to the Monster Hunter type games. It's got a bit of a spin on a familiar concept. The short story is that the world is out of resources and the people are all considered resource burdens and have been imprisoned. You the player are tasked with earning your freedom by doing various jobs. A basic story to explain why you need to kill stuff. A little to mission only oriented for my taste. I like a more cohesive world and gameplay. I've come to accept different play styles on portable gaming consoles.

That is until I discovered Bravely Default on the 3DS. This game is an old school RPG lover's wet dream. Before I go any farther:

Let's be honest here. This game is Final Fantasy in all but name. If you played any FF game on the NES or SNES you know exactly what to expect here. Grinding and lots of it. There is a unique twist to the grinding game play; it's the titular mechanic. Brave or Default; "brave" allows the player to go all in a spend up to 4 future turns to devastate the opposition where "default" puts the player in a defensive stance and allows banking of brave turns. This can really speed up basic fights but can leave you completely defenseless if used at the wrong time. It's a great new addition to spice up what would otherwise be a pretty samey RPG experience.

Well that's what I'm currently working on. I'll post more when I start a new game or if something else tickles my fancy. In the meantime; have you played any of these games, what are you playing, got an suggestions?

Hit me on the PM if you wanna be PSN buddies and not play online together  I make exceptions for D3

I'm playin Microsoft Solitaire Collection on Windows 10.

I'm also contemplating getting rid of my *new* 3DS XL. I still have yet to part ways with my A Link Between Worlds 3DS XL.

So many games I have and don't play..

I think that's the nature of gaming. I don't know any gamer without backlog guilt.

I blame all the sales and steam. Steam is like a game all to itself.

I just feel like it's all a waste of space right now. Don't have a Steam account so I know I've missed some cool stuff, I just don't have time for it

I'm feeling ya. I buy most of my games digitally now. It's easier to ignore "wasted" moneys that way.

I used to have a ton of classic video games, but I off loaded them years ago. I went the rental (gamefly) method for a couple years, but I've settled on trying to only pick up the games I really want to play. I don't count the PS+ sub games, thankfully.

To be honest, I'm getting pretty board with modern gaming, just too much fluff and not enough game play. Hopefully the games I've shared here and on my collection thread reflect that.

Speaking of gameplay, I had an epiphany while playing Axiohm Verge a month or so ago (yeah I know, another PS exclusive). If you like old school metroidvania style games, look this one up. Anyways, to the point. I've played a ton of metroidvanias over the years and they almost always just feel like "not Metroid". So did Axiohm Verge, until it found it's own voice. I found the game's unique play style and that's when it hit me.

Games have texture.

You feel it via gameplay, subconsciously through the gamepad. And man was I liking the feeling of AV. It was a great experience, even if it just sorta petered off and ended. I do love a good indie game, where gameplay comes first. BTW, AV was a 5 year labor of love by one person. It's also on PC, check it!

I can tell you what I'm NOT playing...
With a full deck. :o)

I will just have to live vicaryously through you on this one bud. I tried to maintain some gaming, but since the birth of my first kid, I have had to pick and choose how I spend my free time. I am a man of many hobbies, but something had to give. The last game I played, and have yet to finish, is Skyward Sword. It is/was really good.

The Wii is now strictly a NetFlix box that constantly plays My Little Pony.
I'm hoping when the girls get older I can bring gaming back into my life. With them as well.

All that being said, I like video games. For all the art and story telling that goes into them. It is one of the most unique forms of entertainment. All who complain that they are a waist of time, or that they will rot your brain, has obviously never gamed.
Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of time is the best book I've ever read. ;)

I'll come around here just to look at stuff though. I like to look at stuff.

Well if I can make an educated recommendation for a gateway drug especially with younguns.

The WiiU.

It's kid friendly, but has games for the adults after hours; a unique screen on game pad; and Nintendo is just about the only company still pushing couch co-op.

Nope, but I believe a lot of the wii games/accessories are backward compatible.

Yeah that new Zelda gives me a bad case if the wants. The newest Zelda game on the 3DS is why I own one of those. I'm playing 3DS right now actually (Bravely Default).

Quite a fun game. My nostalgia for LttP may have been a little to deep though. I felt it didn't quite live up to its predecessor. I would highly recommend it though.

I have probably put the SNES games to high up on a pedastal. I consider that generation to be the golden age of gaming. It's my TF G1

Hahaha

My love of the Zelda franchise runs deep. But perhaps above any other game there is one I hold in the highest regard. My rosebud if you will.

Blaster Master on the NES.

I will straight fight to the death for this game. And yes, it's sitting on my 3DS right now!

A wild Cram appears..
A BUNCH OF ZELDAS COBS!! They re-mastered Ocarina of Time in 3D (which came with my first 3DS, the OoT Special Edition, but it plays SOOOO much better on the *new* 3DS XL), then they released a sequel of sorts to A Link to the Past called A Link Between Worlds (which came with my black/gold 3DS XL and is incredible). I also have The Legend of Zelda (NES) and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES) on my 3DS Virtual Console. Dangit, I'm not getting rid of that thing..

I also am not getting rid of my Wind Waker HD Special Edition Wii U!! My baby girl was playing on the Balance Board yesterday while Wii Fit U was on, too cute.

Funny story, I haven't finished OoT 3D, WW HD, Legend of Zelda Hyrule Warriors (which is quite fun) or even PLAYED Skyward Sword (which came with my gold LoZ Wiimote :-D ). AND I bought Majora's Mask 3D (oh yeah that too Cobs!!) when I picked up my *new* 3DS XL (yeah, that's what it is legit called), opened it, never played it, traded it in towards Lego Jurassic World for Wii U when that came out

Why you do Nintendo?! You make me buy the things!!

I also fired up Contra 4 last night. Yeah that's right, Contra 4 for DS (which plays on 3DS). That game is difficulty cranked up to eleventybillion. It's quite humbling at first. Then infuriating. Then hilarious.

Sorry to be wordy. This morning I woke up and was like "I wanna get rid of my stuff". My wife said "Why? It's not taking up space, it's not taking up too much of your time?" I said "Meh" and then I read this thread (the posts after my last one last night) and now I'm happy with my things again. So thanks Cary and Cobotron :-D

WilCo :-D Probably gonna toss the ALBW Gold/Black 3DS XL on the eBay, unless you or Cobs wants it! The only downside was that it came with the digital version of the game, which is locked to my account. Forever!!!!!!! Really fun game if you haven't played it!!

I'm not. I've already played and finished that game, have a 3DS XL and not really into special edition consoles. I'm still resisting picking up a *new* 3ds xl

ALBW is a really fun game. I've gots to go back for a second play through one day.

Let's put it this way, I leave the *new* 3DS in full 3D all the time, AND can use motion controls!! It made Ocarina of Time a lot more fun, and even Star Fox 64 is playable that way!! You seriously don't know how much the system can do until you get the *new* one. I say buy buy buy!!!

Cram, you're going get me in trouble with the mrs. I've played a demo unit and it blows the old XL out of the water.

I'm hoping for a black Friday discount.

Actually, I'm hoping they bring the non XL unit to the states. I want something a bit more portable and I like them swapable face plates.

The XL is just so heavy/top heavy. I find the vita to be better suited for longer play sessions.

I was looking forward to the standard *new* 3DS, then it didn't show up here. The XL did, minus a power adapter LOLOLOLOL

Swapable faceplates would've made missing out on the Majora's Mask edition much better. As it is, just have the *new* black. Still nice.

3DS vs 3DS vs 3DS - wait wut?

Postby no-one » Fri Aug 07, 2015 10:07 am

My work takes me to a lot of small towns and I always check for a majoras mask edition that someone returned or some other unlikely event that would let me find one in the wild.

I don't really want one, but I'd snap it up without hesitation. Then spend the rest of the drive having a head conversation with the mrs.

I prefer the size of the standard 3ds, but the looks of the xl; so the standard new would be right up my ally.

Also, they use the same resolution screens so the STANDARD is SHARPER (even though the screen is bigger on the XL).

In other news, been having issues with Daily Motion on my RokuTV so I'm stuck on episode 9 of RiD :(

Ah cool, I meant to see if the Roku had a daily motion app. I just watched them via a browser.

I'll have to install that for season 2.

That they do, keeps getting a "Cannot connect to DailyMotion service, try again later". Deleting the app doesn't fix it, resetting the TV didn't fix it, slightly annoying. I watch it via my 6+ on my AppleTV, so last night I decided to mirror my Venue 8 Pro to the RokuTV which worked pretty well.
