I.. think this is it. I'll keep on collecting comics, and will have a look at toys and won't say no once or twice a year, if something is REALLY good. But I think this is it for me.

As I said, mostly the fact that I need to start saving money for after my PhD, as I'm not guaranteed a job. Wouldn't want to end up in debt because I was buying toys instead of putting it away.
And some of the money I need now to travel to conferences, which do offer bursaries, but not always, and some of them are really out of my way.
Also, I'm running out of space, as more books come in. And teaching materials, including all the admin paperwork stuff.

As far as space, I'm in a similar situation. And TF's are only part of the stuff I collect. It's quality over quantity for me from now on. Mostly MP's and the occasional Generations/United fig.

I'm at the point of greatness? over quantity with all these new 3rdP combiners iv'e been rethinking what i actually really want as a transformers collection , like my classics there is a few characters i just don't care for mainly the ones bought just cos i wanted them all at that time or lines like beast wars i just had to try out .
Well now it's time to refresh my collection again keeping only key characters and obviously my just couldn't part with favorites and the couple that have upgrades or waiting for upgrades then selling the rest with my random lines i only have a few of with all profit going towards 2013 pre-orders .
Like a few mentioned "space" plays a big issue and i collect other figures also so when it comes to when do i stop collecting transformers i stop every 6 month or something due to being very bored with whats going on aka the prime line and now beast hunters and get into something else but i'm currently back in full swing with the new combiners
So for me i guess it's a case of taking breaks so i don't feel the need to buy figures i don't want, getting rid of the old and bringing in the new creating more space and keeping my tf collection fresh which keeps my interests in the hobby.

Good topic.
I would be done already if Takara/Hasbro stopped making Masterpieces and Genrations figures and I was done with the g1 line.

I am debating join buying FOC Bruticus. (Is he worth it some one?)

I actually like FOC Bruticus. Granted, expectations were low and he does have the same cost cutting that the other early FOC figures have. Expect a lot of hollow spots on the figures.
Still, none are the figures are total trainwrecks and Bruticus is actually a good combiner. I like that everything is integrated into him (no need for silly energon accessories) and he has a decent waist which has the proper leg clearance, something the Energon combiners couldn't quite manage. He does look kinda gangly in the promo pics but it's not so bad when you actually have him.
Like I said, the cost cutting makes the figures feel a little flimsy which does bother me and I hate their color schemes. I went with the Generation 2 boxset which I like better.

Rarely do I place things on pre-order. I get my hands on "most" things when they come out. But what a kick to the d*ck it would be to die with items on pre-order.
I don't see myself not having a storage unit for most of my TF's. I'm a slave to my hobby I admit and I can't see any end for me.

I already stopped because I decided it became too expensive and ridicules.
I now feel much better and happier than I ever did while collecting.

I'm not stopping collecting anytime soon, but I'm consolidating and looking more towards quality than quantity. I too rent a storage unit which is becoming increasingly full, not just with Transformers but also with un-built Stare Wars Lego sets. I just live in too small an apartment to display it all, and spending literally hundreds of euro's / dollars to be able to put another box in storage is indeed slightly ridiculous, even if the stuff I buy usually keeps its value or becomes more valuable (my MISB UCS Lego Millennium Falcon has literally become as valuable as Grand Maximus).
I've decided I need to concentrate more on G1, some (but not all) Masterpieces, and the odd one-off (like I currently have GT-R Maximus on order).
This means I've recently started culling the collection. For example, all my Binaltechs are gone: they were MISB and wasting space in storage from when I got them until when they left for their new owners. Definite proof that they weren't adding too much to my collection. And I've also started selling of my "CHUGUR" collection. They too weren't really giving me much enjoyment; in fact when I was taking photo's of them in all modes to add to my listings, I really noticed how insanely annoying a lot of them are to transform. Movie toys too were purchases I quickly regretted, and I'm glad there are still people out there who enjoy them enough to take them off my hands, because I can't stand them. And as I am selling all this stuff off, I'm noticing no regret at all.

My main aim was to get hold of CHUG versions of all the Season 1, 2, movie and 3 cast. Transformers only, no humies, no quints etc (unless someone does a decent job of them) I never cared for the -masters, pretenders etc.
I will stop collecting when I have fulfilled the above goal. But then, I'll probably get bored and start collecting Headmasters, targetmasters as 3rd parties inevitably homage them!

Re: when do you stop collecting?
I'm kinda sorta done collecting. I buy the odd fancy piece or a rarity here and there but i have all that i really ever wanted now and am content.
All my egregious purchases that i bought on a whim or just wanted to chek out are now being donated to all my friends kids.
I'm streamlining my collection these days. Keepin it classy instead of trashy with too many figures clogging up the shelves.
Plus i have a Harley i need to pay for that i've commited to.

If my wife and I start having kids, I will probably have to cut WAY back on how much money I spend on TFs. I'll keep my collection, though.

I have tried to stop in the past unsuccessfully. I may stop for these 3 possibilities:
when I get laid - not likely to happen anytime soon
when I get married - less likely since I don't believe in love or marriage
when I turn 40 - most likely
when I get laid - not likely to happen anytime soon
when I get married - less likely since I don't believe in love or marriage
when I turn 40 - most likely

Why would any of those things cause you to stop?
Also, like you, I thought I would NEVER fall in love and get married. I honestly couldn't imagine myself wanting to spend the REST OF MY LIFE with someone, and I couldn't imagine anyone would want to spend the rest of THEIR life with ME. I told people the same thing: I'm not looking for love; I have no interest in marriage. That all changed when I met my wife. There's a lid for every pot!
