This should be the answer. You can create new playlists on the left, you'll see an icon for it. Then it's a matter of dragging songs from the central list (which represents songs in a directory) over to the Playlist Edit list on the far right. When you're done, just save the playlist.
To turn off the visualisations, just right click on it and click No Visualisation.

Huh, I'm not sure, sounds like it might be WMP9 or around there somewhere. All I can suggest is going to Windows site and downloading WMP11.
